Mad Max

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 3:26 am

This is the series which inspired Wasteland, and, to a bigger extent, the Fallout series...am I right?

I just bought the Mad Max trilogy, keeping in mind that these movies inspired Fallout.

Just to be sure :)

Yeah, it's pretty hard to do post-apocalypse without referencing Mad Max... It's like doing the cyberpunk genre without paying homage to Blade Runner.

I also think Fallout owes a great deal to A Boy and his Dog, as well. If you really want to find something that inspired the tone (and to a certain extent some of it's visual impact) you'd do well to read the book or watch the movie.

Water World tried...

Do mean they tried not to reference Mad Max, or that they did? :)

Because yeah - Water World was basically "Mad Max in the water," when you get right down to it. Cantankerous loner anti-hero gets pulled into a conflict between a band of survivors and a group of raiders, and ends up saving the day, then walks off into the sunset... ;)

So I finally watched Water World, (It svcked) and I took it as a Mad Max in the sea as well. But with a gilled anti-hero guy. I think that's exactly what they did, reference Mad Max, and really shouldn't have.

Yeah, I mean seriously - I have a feeling the pitch meeting was basically "It's like Mad Max - only this time it's in the Water!" :)

I think it was kind of an interesting setting, and as a b-rate sci-fi movie, I don't think it was that awful, really. Really, if they'd played their cards right and not tried too hard to make it a better movie than it was realistically going to be - they probably had a chance of turning it into an interesting franchise. I mean, look at Highlander - that wasn't that great a movie, either; but they were able to establish a pretty hard-core fanbase out of it.

"The Planet of the Apes" is another post-apocalyptic classic series. For example, there's a cult that worships the Bomb in one of those movies.

Hmm... You know, totally off-topic but:

I wonder why no one has made a Planet of the Apes videogame? :) It might even make good fodder for a Fallout 3 Mod, come to think of it...

If one replaces the 'apes' by 'ghouls', it would be very much Fallout... in fact it could be a good plot for a Fallout 4 - starting with the Lone Wanderer (or some other schmuck) stepping in a time-machine to the future. :P

"Escape from LA/NY" & "The Postman" are other movies that contain some post-apocalyptic elements. Funnily enough, the latter one again features Kevin Costner.

I watched Mad Max 1 and 2, really enjoyed them :) Especially the latter. I'll watch Mad Max 3 when I'll get the chance, even though they say it's not anything special.

Yeah, I mean you really need to watch all 3 for the "complete experience." Beyond Thunderdome wasn't all bad - it's just kind of by that point, it had gone all big-budget and Hollywood; which sort of took away from it's low-budget charm. The first movie was first and foremost just an excuse to wreck a bunch of cars, after all.

The first two were cult classics; and the third is pretty obviously a cash-in on that. That said - I don't think that's such a bad thing necessarily. It's not my favorite out of the three, but even then it's still pretty good, I think.

I really hated Mad Max 1 and 3. Although I liked 3 better than 1. Anyways, the Road Warrior was just movie excellence. Easily one of my favorite films. I seriously could've just watched the Road Warrior and felt at ease. They should really make a 4th one though would be pretty awesome.

I like the part on Fallout in Junktown I think. Haven't played in a while been playing Fallout 2 since its bigger lol. Anyways, the town with Gizmo. When you go up to the guy spoiler ahead.

trying to keep the dog from following him he tells you his owner, and his description is hands down Mad Max lol with the leather jacket and everything.

Finally watched MM3. Never thought it would turn out so differently....involving children. Not bad though, but MM2 is definitely my favourite.

You're not the only one. Vast majority of people who have seen the trilogy consider MM2 to be the best, and many consider it the best in its genre.

At least in the first movie Max didn't need to rely on a deus ex machina to save his leather behind. And the opening car chase scene was amazing for such a low-budget Aussie flick.

I'm super sorry to go off-topic but I had a teacher with the nickname Mad max, he was fired because students complained about him being so creepy.
