I feel like Beth made the Fighters Guild a battle of good and evil in TES: 4 with them against the blackwood company. I could see them doing some shady underhanded things.
Everything was a battle of good and evil in TESIV. :meh:
I preferred their stance in Morrowind where you were tricked into being a tool for the Camonna Tong to do their quests, believing you were helping fight criminal scum, when in reality you're unwittingly helping them destroy the Theives' Guild (who were definitely the lesser of the two evils, when compared to the Camonna Tong, and indeed they had their "good" moments, namely the Bal Molagmer sub-questline) from the inside, with only a scant few members realising that something fishy's going on. If you realise something's wrong (with the help of that Ald-Ruhn guildmaster), you can deal with the quests more peacefully instead.
It's a lot better than the generic and obvious "These are the Fighters' Guild guys. They're honorable, Lawful Good and pet puppies. These are the Blackwood Company guys. They're dishonorable, Chaotic Evil and kick puppies. We also present them as doing drugs, at the expense of fan perceptions of a certain race's culture. We'll pick the Good side for you, regardless of whether or not you actually want to be with the Fighters' Guild".
