Im a mage, I don't need a lockpick!

I love the game, don't get me wrong, but I have a major gripe. It seems like every game that comes out Bethesda gets rid of more and more really cool spell effects. I play TES games because I like to play around with magic and be a sorcerer. TES has always been great at doing that. In Morrowind they had some really cool spells like levitate and recall. Oblivion got rid of that but retained some cool spells like unlock spells and waterwalking. Now skyrim got rid of those, as well as countless other effects. It just feels like they keep dumbing down their games more and more to fit the console gamers wishes. But playing a mage is not all about throwing around fireballs, it's about all the other cool abilities that come with using magic, which in this game there are not many of those other abilities.

The spell animations are the best I have ever seen in a game by far, but I dont understand why they would remove a simply awesome spell like unlock. I'm a mage! Why would I need to use a lockpick!? No more walk on water? Levitate? Just about the only spell left that has any magic like utility is invisability and it's not really invisability anymore. It's camoflage and requires sneak skills to work properly. Really? I'm [censored] invisable, dude!

How long do you guys think this will take to get some decent spells back in the game via Mods or hopefully by Bethesda adding more spells in later releases? Anyone else agree with me?

Im pretty sure you'll start to see em after the construction set is released. I liked Morrowind's different lockpick's you could buy, instead of one generic kind (oblivion :swear: ) and skill. I dont know about you, but for me, it was more fun/daring like gambling on whether or not you'd unlock the chest. Not to mention it was more fun in Morrowind because time wouldn't freeze like that stupid mini-game in oblivion, hence making stealing riskier!

Because it trivializes lockpicking. What's the point in a thief upping their lockpick skill if a mage can up their Alteration skill and do it more efficiently (no possibility of failure if you can cast the spell, no lockpicks, auto-replenishing magicka) and with more benefits (a whole bunch of other useful alteration spells)? Bypassing locks is a thief skill, not a mage skill.

Levitate?

Makes map design harder when the player can just go flying freely in any direction at almost any time, and leaves combat exploits wide open.

I think there are enough exploits available through enchanting and alchemy which more than out weigh any expliots having levitate would bring. As for lock picking, people who like the mini game and the feel of being a thief would still use lockpicking and would not have to waste skill points and perks leveling up a magic related skill if they have no intention of using magic for other things. You had to put a substantial number of skill points into alteration in oblivion to open the big locks. Big waste for a thief to do that just to avoid lockpicking. All in all, removing fun elements like levitate ruins what elder scrolls is all about, freedom. Elder scrolls has been and always will be easily exploitable. Remove levitate, but not 100 percent chamelion armor? See my point?

Also levitate does not mean super man fly, there are limits and mana consumption to balance it.

And finaly, the amount of humiliation one must feel as a mage, confronted with a lock and being forced to pull out a rusty lock pick.... can not be explained on this forum post... He can devestate armies with a wave of his hand, but a lock confounds him.... Sad day.

I was stumped by the removal of that type of spell, too. It made no sense. Lockpicking can still be viable even with the spell in the game. Heck, it was that way in Oblivion! There were no issues!
Also very annoyed by the lack of Feather. I mean, come on...
