But im getting mini quests from a guy who will 'put in a good word for me'..

If I keep doing these fetch quests will I eventually be accepted into the guild?

I really need some spells.

You have to have at least 1 mage guild skill to be at least 22 to be able to join.

Is there any way to get spells without being in the mages guild? How are you expected to level the skills up with out being able to get spells?

Edit: while I'm at it, I haven't tried magic in this game yet, how bad is the % chance to fail spells when your skill is low leveled? and are there trainers in Daggerfall?

There is 1 person at the mages guild who will sell spells to non-members. But they are expensive in both money and magicka required. You could buy the cheapest spell available (bouyancy?) and ...cast/rest/cast/rest/cast/rest....until your skill is high enough to join the guild. Then go to the spellmaker from whom you can buy spells much cheaper.
The problem is....if you have a "normal" character who only has magicka equal to 1/2 your intelligence you still won't be able to cast some of the spells you might want.

There are some spells which always succeed, if you have enough magicka. Others have a %chance depending on how you set them up with the spellmaker. Of course the higher the chance, the more expensive the spell.

Every guild has trainers. The mages guild and some some temples train magic skills. IIRC you can only train once in a 24 hour period and it's more expensive if you're not a member.

The six schools of magic. Destruction, Restoration, Mysticism, Thaumaturgy, Alteration, Illusion, and Cheese Sticks. Wait. That's seven.
You have to increase your skills in the magic arts, which means either buying expensive training at a temple (temples will train non-members at double the cost, maybe it's even more) or keep practicing the low grade basic spells until your skill goes up. Each spell is tied to a school of magic (Fireball, for example, trains Destruction.) and casting that spell helps to train the skill in that school. Once you're in the guild, it helps to make a bunch of low-cost 'junk' spells that don't really do much of anything, but that are cheap enough to cast again and again to practice that skill. Then you hole up in an inn someplace and practice them for a few weeks.
