Versions of Mage Armor can help you take a few hits while you retreat to a safe range. And it only really works withOUT armour. Robes or civvies are fine.

Also if you're in the early stages of the game, you're much weaker. I'd advise on bringing a follower with you like Mjoll. She's a beast and can't die, not to mention shell take most of the damage.

Use helpers from the conjuration tree to take the blunt of stuff while you hang in the background. Wear robes according to your level in destruction. If you get swarmed, use the bound sword or carry a sword. Whenever i go into a dungeon or cave, at lower levels, I always have a companion with me. I also do alot of sneaking, so when I see then enemies, I can figure my plan of attack, so to speak, and always use a helper from conjuration. Hope that helps.

Check out the "questions for serious mage players" thread on page 2, that may help you.

Seconded. Although you actually have to reach medium levels in order to get her favour quest.

Depending on your character's skill go with conjuration. Get the 'summon familiar' and let it do its job. It'll die a few times but it's a quick and easy summon. Also, this is why Mages tend to be OP compared to other 'heavy armour users'.
