if all the mages died or went completely mad... couldnt that mean the best mage or sorcerer class in eso would only possiblely been a mage for 4 years?

In offline TES games you can progress from lvl 1 prisoner to lvl 50 Archmage in one ingame month.
Relax, it's a mmo game.
there are discrepancies in lore but if you look into the lore there are certain people who were around including the Arch Mage at the time who were able to protect themselves and consequently magery survived even Sheogarath in all his madness still had magiccal powers and was able to pass these powers on via spells hidden in normal books
There isn't a whole lot of information on it, but it's fair to assume not all Mages were killed, as there are many older examples within the Mages Guild living and breathing in the game.
Btw, it perfectly explains why whole alliances armies consist of lvl 10 white-geared battlemages.
Ok....
Well that explains a lot about my character... who is a mage... and even more about my master who was a mage.
I don't mind to have few things little loose in the head makes the character even more interesting..
EDIT:

Sheogorath isn't a mage, he's of the same order of spirits as Molag Bal and Azura.
sorry dont remember which one the mage was it starts with an S as well but my brain just doesnt work to well nowadays
It simply says "Mages", and there is no reason to assume that it means "all Mages"; no more than saying that "people died" would imply that "all the people died".
I thought my Shiny Staff of Magnus qualified me as a loremaster of Skyrim, the same way my Kill the Mage Guild leader vs. Kill the Telvanni leader, and I liked them both so I killed neither, made me a loremaster of Morrowind. Now I think I should have read some of those books.
Didn't say all mages died or went mad, just mages died or went mad.
I ar suspicious about that dead "technically" ...
Like Sakiri mentioned, they have no gender. You might see them as one thing, but they can appear however they like. Molag Bal has even been noted to walk among cultists as a female.
