Magic and melee combat animations

Post » Tue Feb 02, 2010 1:36 am

Animations of throwing magic in Oblivion and Morrowind were dull and boring. One thing should be implemented: when you're playing as mage, you should have that feel of unnatural superiority and awesomeness. I was thinking it should be something some of us have seen in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Also, graphic effects of fire, snow etc. should be more graphically superior.

As for combat, I was thinking of system which was shown in Assassins Creed (but NOT with such easiness) with elements of Dark Messiah (ability to decapitualte enemy).

What do you think?

I liked the magic animations in Oblivion, it was simple and you could tell what spell an enemy had just cast because of the simpleness. I have no problems with the combat either. :toughninja: :mage: :starwars:

Combat animations like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WZYkUbNUkw

And more varied magic animations, depending on what spell you cast. Magic animations need a completely new overhaul I'd say.

But then again Bethesda has stated, if I remember correctly, that they have been hiring new great talented people to work especially on improving animations.

Some combat systems i liked were from Assassins Creed and The Witcher. Mostly for the flow of them. I've still yet to see a nice control system, but the fact that with those you really felt like your character had a good feel for the sword, the movements were sure and steady. This is opposed to Oblivion where the combat is jerky and halting. The character didn't seems like it actually had mastery over his/her weapon and instead just relied on brute force to hack away at an opponent. In Assassin's Creed and The Witcher the player skill went into learning the control scheme and using it effectively, which i suppose is an acceptable middle ground between the ideal -- a control setup that mirrors the action to the point that you actually feel like you're skillfully controlling the sword rather than directing someone to swing it -- and the inept -- the system of oblivion where the player *could* master the control of the character to execute special attacks and such, but it was far easier simply to button mash the "trigger" and hack your opponent into submission.

New and better please! TES animations typically svck so hard, they create a localized black hole of Fail.

Who has better animations? I've been especially impressed with the model animations in games developed by Ertain/Goshow. Fluid, intricate, natural, I love watching them when I'm playing.

New please, I never understood the idea of giving us a 3rd person option that was rubbish...combat(using weapons) was awful in Oblivion. Please take a look at Demons souls, it wasn't anything special but it worked brilliantly

Heavily modded Oblivion has best fighting system so far.
I must admit that I hardly ever cast ( except healing ) though.

The animations aren′t bad in Oblivion, the only problem is that they′re not varied. A simple system like the Jedi Outcast game would be a great improvement. You would have more than one stance, and the movements would be accordingly with the directional keys. The magic system is the one that needs more overhauling IMO
