Magic Combat

Post » Fri Dec 03, 2010 5:32 pm

In the trailer you see responsive combat with the Dragons guy sliced head when it was attacking and it's head knocked back showing a nice responsive combat system.

That was followed by attacking them in the air meaning they can take damage anywhere you can see them.

And this is where magic COULD be overwhelmingly powerful if the magic is treated with some sort of force behind it like a sword stroke and assuming if they keep getting hit while coming towards you or while flying Mage seems like the perfect choice and a sword Mage even better.

At a distance you could spam spells with "force" damage to keep hitting it back if it responds to the magic like a sword. And in cc hit it with the sword. If done right it might meen that a Dragon or any other creature would be unable to vey close to you jmo.

What do you think? ( no WOT spoilers )

Hopefully magic will have some weight behind it. I'm also hoping there's some sort of magic finishers like there is for melee weapons. I can't wait until we start hearing about some magic perks. The few we've heard about are all melee related I believe.

The thread title does not make sense.

If done right, magic would not be overpowered. If done WRONG, magic will be overpowered.

Following this logic, marksmanship would be just as overpowered.

You also forget that it's hard to hit fast moving, flying objects...

Marksman ship would not be even close , Tod for one said arrows will be rare and having regenerating mana is far from rare also he said that bow draw to
E will be drastically slowed down. And hitting a fast flying moving target becomes
Alot easier when it is a huge dragon flying directly at you ....

When it's flying directly at you you can also hit it with a sword...

Not if it has any Hightower and is strafing you with some type of shout. Or if it flys low hit it multipal times rather that one slash.

Actually, overpowered magic is the only kind I'll be happy with (as long as it works both ways - that is, magic-using NPC being equally threatening). In real life, a single fireball would at best result in a visit to the hospital and life-long scarification, and at worst instant inceneration. Of course, it would make the game freakishly hard/easy if the same applied to Skyrim, but I expect magic to at least be something that induces well-justified fear and is never to be taken lightly. An end-game mage should be able to reduce any common enemy to a pile of ash/mindless zombie/ice statue/soulless husk/piece of furniture/etc. before he could even get close enough to splatter her robe with blood.

Kind of like how in real life a single hit on the head with a mace or a single stab in the stomach will almost definitely result in death.

Yes true, having said all this, NPC's in Skyrim should not run strait at you swinging there sword whilst you bombard them with fire balls. They need to be tactile and have a certain fear of the magic.

I agree with the above posts, really the only type of magic is op magic but I hope that some creatures will recognize the danger of it and respond accordingly.

On s slightly different note with the new spell types fighting mages this game will be no walk in the park I hope.

What do you think about a short range teleport spell like : teleport 5 meters forward or back depending on the way you were walking and goes up by 5 meters a ?charge lvl? Or what ever bethsidia is calling the 3 magic forms per spell.

Well from what todd has said so far basic magic seems to be geared around the idea of magic combat being extremely offense oriented with little defense... I expect not only does it take a little bit of time to recover from flinging a 2 hand fireball but that the magic it uses is very hard to handle unless you dedicate alot of level ups to magicka and thus have little health or stamina...

That was the real problem with magic in ob it was on top of the shield and sword and armor AND it was far too defnese oriented as well as being offense oriented.

Ehh...no.

"If you come face to face with another wizard, you’ll want to keep an attacking spell in one hand and improve your defense by equipping a ward spell in the other. Suddenly, magic duels become much more interesting, as you must attack at the opportune time, use the ward as a shield when your opponent is casting spells your way, and manage your magicka level by consuming potions."
