Magic Feels Fable 3-esk?

Post » Mon Aug 29, 2011 8:40 pm

First topic posted in several years...

After watching some of the gameplay demo involving magicka and what not...I couldn't help but feel disappointed that felt alot like watching somebody throw magic around in fable 3...

I'm not saying anything bad about fable 3 (in this post)...but watching that just made me a little down about recognising similarities to another game.

On another note...that magicka effects on npc's looked way too similar to OB's for my liking...

any thoughts?

BTW I am still super pumped for Skyrim - have been since the days of Jiub on that leaky old prison boat long ago...

By all means it seems more akin to Bioshock's Plasmids than Fable 3.

I think he just means generally. The charge up, combining spells, etc. Reminded me of fable as well.

True, a comparison to Bioshock's plasmids seems more apt. Which I can only see as a compliment, they were very adaptive and a great benefit in combat.

Wasn't it already confirmed you can't combine spells unless there the same spell?

Both the combat and the magic remind me most of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

(btw, Bethesda/Zenimax recently acquired the studio that made DMoMM, no correlation of course...)

Agreed. Bioshock's Plasmids were very well done and useful in combat.

I find it much more similar to BioShock 2 plasmids. When I first saw magic gameplay, BS2 instantly came to mind.

I don't know what was so wrong in Fable's magic, at most that it was hard to switch between melee, ranged and magic, but that certainly won't be a problem here.

I don't like to think of such things, even though I do see them.
If I just ignore the voices, they will go away...

Bioshock is what inspired Todd to add it and I could not agree more that its an excellent idea.

Who cares if it's similar to Fable? It's a good system. That's all that matters.

Yeah, lack of spell creation, and the emphasis on the dual wield gimmick is making magic look totally inferior to previous games.

Xernac, while I appreciate your opinion, you need to point out "the lack of spell creation" in almost every post?
And while it maybe does look like Fable (And Bioshock by what matter) it will have waaaay more possibilities with all those effects and animations. (How much effects Fable had? 8?)

Spell making with the duel wielding and all the new spell effects would have worked good using a spell crafting system.

If its on topic, which it is. Being a topic about magic and all.

I don't think it looks anything similar to fable 3's horrible 5 spells.....

I can't see any relation between those two magic systems at all. The only difference between this system and the old TES magic systems, besides the removal of spellmaking, is that you can dual wield magic and that the spells look about five thousand times better. The touch/ranged/self mechanics have just been replaced by different spells instead of variations of the same one to make them more unique.

I hope you don't take offence when I say this, because for all I know you may have a valid reason to think what you do, but sometimes it feels like people here are desperately searching for problems where there are none.

Well yes, this is logical.
With the removal of spellmaking the magic has been removed from TES.

Since there no longer is any difference between TES magic and other games' special abilities such as psi powers or plasmids, yes.
It is logical that it looks generic.
Thats what it is now.

The similarity to Bioshock's plasmids, in case you missed Todd on the subject, is intentional.

In the past, the games had very "meh" magic systems, if you ask me: Instead of having a few spell effects that got more powerful as you leveled up, you had to constantly upgrade your spellbook... in Oblivion, you end up with a mess. Now, magic is more arcane, intuitive, and all around usable.
