Magic in Orc Society

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:20 pm

how is magic viewed in Orsimer society? I'm trying to play an Orc spellsword in Skyrim (dual wielding axes with oakflesh and berserke rage r = unstoppable man-god) but I also want to roleplay a little.

Do they view it as weak? i mean there were Orc shamans in Daggerfall and I suppose that was magic but I'm not sure.

Physical fitness is the virtue in Orsimeri culture. An Orc that devotes time to cultivating mental disciplines is likely to be somewhat estranged from his kin-folk.

What Haute says is correct, but that doesn't necessarily preclude primitive, mystical, shamanistic hedge-magic, which is probably relatively widespread in orsimer society given the prevalence of shamans and wise-women.

Well Orc mages aren't unheard of, but so aren't Nord or Redguard ones either. I suppose that it is only rare in Orc society for one to take time to study the arcane, but I wonder what their view of destruction and combat type magic or perhaps of Battlemages

The female orc who gives you the malacath quest is a mage who uses ice spike. She lives inside the orc stronghold and I think she's the daughter of the chief.

Also the librarian at the mages college is an older male orc.

Forms of savage magic are likely practiced, as there were also plenty of shaman orcs in Daggerfall, who were basically mages. The best you'll get for those who stay in the strongholds and practice magic would be for the role of a soothsayer or spiritual guide. As for learned orsimer, it's almost certainly they leave the strongholds to pursue knowledge and to become civilized.

He's clearly not really associated with the stronghold-style "True Orcs", and it's questionable if he is a mage or just a librarian who is very serious about his job.

However, many orcs are just sell-swords and have completely left their stronghold ways behind, so if you want to role-play, playing as one of those types makes just as much sense as any.

If there is any sort of higher virtue orcs would aspire to, however, it's "survival"... Having restoration magic to help yourself survive in the wild would not be seen as an act of weakness, and they'd probably pay battlemages a great deal of respect for balancing the way of the warrior with a few fireballs for good measure. Just make sure you can still throw a mean punch, and take a beating, too. Wearing all-orcish armor would be a plus.

Most Orc shamans are probably priests of Malacath.

So Conjuration (bound weapons and summoned Daedra) would be the preferred school of magic.

I imagine that most Orcs use restoration and destruction. Conjuration would be seen as cowardly, as it has someone else fight your battles for you. Illusion as well, as its main use is getting you out of trouble. They wouldn't bother with alteration and mysticism, it'd go way over their heads.
