Is magic over powered?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:27 am

So my first character was a mage. Once I could get the impact perk I got it. Now my mage is a God and completely unstoppable because the stagger is huge. So what do you guys think: are mages broken?

Play a character focusing on melee or archery then come back.

Nah. It's possible to become "overpowered" with all three archetypes if you know what you're doing.

Go and play some other build for a few days then come back and tell us if you still think mages are overpowered.

Or I did something very wrong, or Im playing a different game heh... I would try a mage type to see what happens.

First off I have played all the other builds. In my opinion the mage is the best and I literally can stagger any creature and can't be beat. Their is an off chance that I can be beat with my other characters but not a good one. And what do the other archtypes have anything to due with my topic?

Even if it is a shock mage I can still stagger him so he can't cast spells.

Mages? No.
Mages with that perk? Kinda, but some people enjoy that playstyle. Broken seems too much, overpowered, yes, broken, nah.
Thats the beauty of this game you have the choice!

The way the perk sounds in the description makes it sound a lot worse then it actually is. But yes you are right I do have the choice. I just think impact shouldn't stagger large creatures like dragons and Giants.

Personally i think magic is in a rather awkward position, sure stun-locking can be powerful though at higher levels it seems a bit silly given the relative power of offensive outlets. For example, with maxed skills and ideal gear a destruction user can control a group of bandits to death quite safely, on the other hand an archer with similar gear and relevant skills can simply kill all of the bandits in less than half of the time. Illusion on the other hand seems a bit overpowered withing its own niche given its capacity to frenzy a group of enemies then turn invisible and watch the show before finishing off the stragglers. Personally I'd rather trade control and magicka efficiency for damage, though i suppose that would reduce the variety of play styles presented.

They're still fun to play and there's no multiplayer to have to balance for.

I am currently level 38 and I stun all enemies without fail and kill them. All though it certainly is faster with bows or what not.

Get past level 10 first, then after that, get past level 35, then tell us what you reckon. Tip: Theres a pretty big gap between starting out using magic, and using it 30 levels down the track.
edit- my bad, i didnt see the above post. i quess it all boils down to what type of mage in the end. There are porblems with destuction howqever, at later levels
