Magic in FO?

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 12:56 am

Ok, I did a search for magic and Skyrim kept coming up, so I assume there is nothing on this in the FO forums (spoilers ahead). So in Point Lookout DLC, magic seems to be introduced in the one quest where you return a book to the Dunwich Building. The whole quest seems to be an Easter egg referencing H.P. Lovecraft, and deals with the arcane. Given how there are those who either like or dislike aliens in FO, I believe there are those like me who like it as a novelty, meaning maybe only one alien sighting in an entire game and this could extend into the arcane. I think some sort of black occult magic would be an interesting touch for maybe one side quest in future FO games, but where do you all stand on this?

Well i still think it's more haunted than anything else. There has been 5 Fallout games and none has talked about magic so i doubt that it will be included

No. The psycics in the first Fallout were pretty lame too and not really workable as PCs.

I can grab a Harry Potter book and call it "Magic". Does that make it magic? No. Neither does his book. I completely advocate Magic (the stuff like Vision Quests and what not) for Tribals, but actual Lightning Bolts and Fire Balls? Not a chance in Hell.

The black oblisik in Dunwich (and the Krivbekneh book) is a direct reference to H.P. Lovecraft's stories. It was more of an easter-egg reference than anything.

And Blackhall doesn't use magic. He appears to be worshipping the book. He's going to use the religious beliefs that the Swamp-folk attach to it and manipulate them into following his commands. So he's using the idea of religion, not magic.

Only if it's carefully tucked away and hard to find. Like the Forecaster in New Vegas. Same with aliens. However, I would personally just prefer it if neither showed up in any way, because it's been done and it isn't even remotely what the series is about. I'd rather not come to expect a token instance of magic and aliens in every game.

I must reply with a vehemently NO! No way, no magic, no how... not in Fallout! Keep it in TES, but don't turn the wasteland into some magical realm! :stare:  Fallout needs to be kept "real". ;)

Wanna see magic in Fallout? Take a look at this bobble head. Now read the text on it. Can you notice how your muscles grew? No need to worry, it's just magic.... :sorcerer:

A feasibly explanation to anything weird: Your character has been hit in the head one too many times or (s)he is drugged up.
Considering PL has you going through a Punga trip I think that the whole book is just a hallucination.

Getting a bit off topic here, but what do you guys think of the ghostly whisper that can be heard at the Goodsprings Cemetery(new vegas)?
i mean,is it just an Easter egg,or are ghosts and the like a real thing on the Fallout universe?

As for magic, just keep it in the TES series.

There was a ghost in Fallout 2. So, for better or worse, such supernatural sidequests have already been done in Fallout. Just as long as they remain unobtrusive "Easter eggs", it doesn't bother me too much. Even without magic, Fallout is far from being a universe based in reality.

Maybe, if it's something like:
You help a tribal shaman get ready for ceremony/standard shaman supplies(SSS)/whatever. Make it clear that he's not all right in the head and PC is doubtful and thinks he's a lunatic. But once you get him the SSS, he does something that should be impossible and the vanishes. PC is left going "What... could he... nah...impossible.

A humorous, easter egg type thing.

Er what is it then? I guess i would call it psychic, sonic mutation or telepathic to sound scientific but basically that is magic... and that ghost looking for her jewlery in fo2 kind of confirms the super natural in fallout...

And flaming bears and fortune teller kid pushes it more-so
