Is magic the most powerful force?

Post » Sat Apr 02, 2011 12:04 pm

Not to mention you either need a spell, alchemical poison (produced using a mage skill), or an enchanted item (created by an enchanter, ie, a mage) to actually inflict silence on a mage.

Exactly. The only way to defeat a very skilled mage is either with a very skilled assassin (the mage wont have time to fight back, if he ever even knows what hit him) or another mage, unless a warrior has enchanted armor and weapon, which requires the aid of a mage. Mage's trump card is their alchemy (as MadCat said) as if they are silenced, they can still drink a potion to do it for them. A well taught alchemist can gain the strength of twenty men with the right potions.

I dunno. I find it a lot easier to hack up mages with a warrior than to blast warriors with a mage. Unless the mage summons one of those damn [censored] [censored] Greater Bonewalkers :swear:

The most powerful force is the Unstoppable Force! Except we don't know for certain what happens when it hits an Unmovable Object.

Note to self: release Thu'um mod for Oblivion.

Why would you need a mod? I rolaplay Tongue in Morrowind, no need for any mod, just imagine that your character is shouting instead of waving hand, you can shout yourself if you really like to ;)

It's more like rock paper scissors, As someone said...

Combat > Stealth > Magic > Combat ~

A Good assassin beats the mage, The mage beats the warrior and the warrior beats the assassin.

Yeah, brute force is just the norm for all conflicts, and the subtler methods of violence are just the more effective and rare exceptions.

Bah.

The Alchemical-inclined Illusionist wins in the end.

He blends in with his surrounds, tosses a frenzy spell into the mix, and within twenty minutes his enemies have killed each other.

Illusion trumps all- except maybe mysticism; Detect Life is the arch nemesis of any Illusionist worth his salt...

Not really. A mage really needs to know his enemy is coming, make sure he's got his defenses up. If he sees the assassin coming, he can throw up a shield to slow the blade, a "resist poison" spell to slow the poison, and follow up with a deadly touch spell. The warrior, on the other hand, is already wearing his armor (unless he's a roleplayer :P ), and probably has the fortitude to have the time to make mincemeat out of the would-be assassin.

The warrior, on the other hand, needs to be facing a physical threat. A shell of steel, or even ebony, is no help against powerful magic. And those of you who, in a game, are having trouble blasting warriors to kingdom come, are not making use of magic's full potential. Spell stacking is not cheating. However, that same mage may have difficulty setting up a conflict with an assassin. Sure, life detection ensures he can run, but he can't hide... but he can run, and run, and run. And when the mage finally gets sick of chasing, the assassin can strike at his leisure.

For the assassin's part, he really needs to be able to get in a one-hit kill. Against mages, this isn't too difficult--their frail constitutions (relatively speaking) make them easy targets, caught unaware. Warriors can generally survive that first strike, and return the attack.

So it really is a matter of "rock, paper, scissors." Warrior beats assassin, assassin beats mage, mage beats warrior. I wonder if, studying the history of dominant military tactics (in Tamriel), we would find a cycle of tactics based upon this concept? Something like a warrior elite being displaced by a mageocracy, which necessitates stealthy tactics, which, when the stealthy rule, are displaced by toughs, and onward. You could almost make an astrological concept out of this, having Tamriel go through successive "ages" of "the Warrior," next "the Mage," finally "the Thief," and back to "the Warrior" once again.

Hmm... this is promising... it'll have nothing to do with actual Tamriel history (I don't think), but I think it'll be interesting. I'm considering figuring out how to fit ALL the constellations, not just the Guardians, into this cycle...

If an assasin In TES actually behaved like an assasin, maybe. What we have is weak warriors skilled in short blade.

And yes, magic is probably the most powerful force. Mages tend to focus too much on the magical and forget their own bodies, however.

Well if you notice, most warriors in Tamriel know at least a little magic. Or some powerful enchantment. or such.

In game wise A mage needs to stack several schools to be truelly effective. Your warrior needs 3 skills for in combat, and 4 to be effictive all around. they need an armor skill, a weapon skill, block, and armorer. Those skills they have left can be taken up by many other things (In Oblivion I chose sneak security and restoration).

In the lore there are either many more standerd soldiers then there are mages or you have one warrior who carries around enchanted gear falling out his [censored]. I don't care how good that mage is, if the warrior is reflecting all the damage there isn't a thing that mage can do.

Warriors have more health and can run faster so it balances out. Mages have to use magic to makes them strong and then they have less magika to attack, warriors just need bash a mage a few times then he is dead. But you have more uber powerful people who are mages, but there aren't many uber powerful people, so it is a tie. The real winner is stealthy character, cause you can't kill want you don't see. A stealth based character will have 3 things a way in, a way out, and any tool that will keep him unseen or will help. that makes a stealth win at everything!
