how is this thread still alive?
PS. a good stealthy person could ninja both the mage and the fighter.
Not really. A mage really needs to know his enemy is coming, make sure he's got his defenses up. If he sees the assassin coming, he can throw up a shield to slow the blade, a "resist poison" spell to slow the poison, and follow up with a deadly touch spell. The warrior, on the other hand, is already wearing his armor (unless he's a roleplayer
), and probably has the fortitude to have the time to make mincemeat out of the would-be assassin.
The warrior, on the other hand, needs to be facing a physical threat. A shell of steel, or even ebony, is no help against powerful magic. And those of you who, in a game, are having trouble blasting warriors to kingdom come, are not making use of magic's full potential.
Spell stacking is not cheating. However, that same mage may have difficulty setting up a conflict with an assassin. Sure, life detection ensures he can run, but he can't hide... but he can run, and run, and run. And when the mage finally gets sick of chasing, the assassin can strike at his leisure.
For the assassin's part, he really needs to be able to get in a one-hit kill. Against mages, this isn't too difficult--their frail constitutions (relatively speaking) make them easy targets, caught unaware. Warriors can generally survive that first strike, and return the attack.
So it really is a matter of "rock, paper, scissors." Warrior beats assassin, assassin beats mage, mage beats warrior. I wonder if, studying the history of dominant military tactics (in Tamriel), we would find a cycle of tactics based upon this concept? Something like a warrior elite being displaced by a mageocracy, which necessitates stealthy tactics, which, when the stealthy rule, are displaced by toughs, and onward. You could almost make an astrological concept out of this, having Tamriel go through successive "ages" of "the Warrior," next "the Mage," finally "the Thief," and back to "the Warrior" once again.
Hmm... this is promising... it'll have nothing to do with actual Tamriel history (I don't think), but I think it'll be interesting. I'm considering figuring out how to fit ALL the constellations, not just the Guardians, into this cycle...
