Magically locked doors

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:22 pm

I received a quest to find someone in a dungeon, I'm positive I've explored the whole dungeon. Except at the very entrance of the dungeon is a magically locked door, which I believe holds the person I'm looking for. Is there any way to open it besides spells? Thanks in advance.

Can't you just smash it down with a silver/daedric/magic weapon?

I assume you don't have any magic skills, or you would just make your own Unlock spell?

Those locked doors are supposed to be linked with a switch. Try looking around the door, or in the next/previous rooms if there's a switch somewhere. One type of switch that looks like a ship wheel can sometimes "disappears" if looked at from some directions.

If you really can't find a switch, you can always use the [ or ] keys to "teleport" to the quest locations of the dungeon. I personally prefer to skip the quest in this case, roleplaying that the person was not in the dungeon/had been killed/lost forever. :)

If you can post a picture, *maybe* some of us might know around where the switch is located, since many dungeons use the same patterns. And since magically locked door don't appear often, there's not a lot of variety of them.

Only if you add a line in the Z.cfg that reads "cheatmode 1" (without quotations, obviously.)

I just used that trick before. Stuck in dungeon, trying to kill an atronach, I teleported around the dungeon (it's not exact science) until I found it.

Funny story. The atronach was inside a steel cage. Surrounded by saber tooth tigers. So when I teleported, I teleported inside the atronach. I had to swing my sword madly until i got the message about it not wanting to go back to the mage guild and then had to use my anchor/teleport magic spell to exit the dungeon before the tigers ripped me to shreds.

Be careful with that cheat. Make sure you save before doing it.

Hehe yeah it can be tricky. It is indeed good advice to save before using it! :D
Especially since you don't know where you'll end up. I once teleported to a room with 3 ancient liches. I didn't even have the time to press the key again to teleport, I dropped death as soon as I was spotted. :P

Somehow, I never got to enter the line in the Z.cfg file. I still use my copy from 1996, though I believe it came with the latest patch. But even if the line is not in Z.cfg, I can use the codes anyway. But the line about merchants repairing magic items doesn't work.

I did find a way around it, but it took a lot of exploring (apparently I didn't explore everything). It also turns out I was right because the person I needed to find was in there, though all they said was just random jibber-jabber, So I'll check back with the quest giver to see if I did what I needed.

I did try bashing it down, but I only tried steel and mithril, but nothing happened. I will try using a silver weapon, and once I find myself some daedric/magical items I'll try that too.

After getting behind the magically locked door, I did find a statue that asks "Command me and entry shall be yours." I tried "y" and "open" but did nothing.

Try pressing your activation key. Mine is hotkeyed to [space], but check your controls.

I've probably done a couple of thousand dungeon crawling quests and don't recall ever finding a quest object behind a magically locked door. Not saying it's impossible, just not very likely.
Nearly every time I haven't been able to find a mobile quest object, such as a person, it has been because they have fallen into the void, usually off a tower or down a shaft. Using [ or ] it can be checked whether or not the person is inside the dungeon. You could also exit and re-enter the dungeon which will then reset. (And I would then use [ to check things out again).

I did use the activation key. As far as bashing the door with a silver weapon, nothing happened.

Edit: I exited the dungeon to see if I finished the quest and I did, left with a bunch of enchanted items, one of the items having Wizard's Lock (Which I assume opens magic doors), as well as a received a short shirt with Jack of Trades from the quest giver.

Didn't realize you were talking about Shedungent and looking for Nulfaga until now.
The only way to get through any magically locked door is by magic, they can't be beaten down or lockpicked.
Nulfaga gives you the key, in her gibberesh, on how to unlock that door by saying something like "shut up my door". "Shut up" being the operative words.

I didn't notice any key in my inventory, and because all the good treasure I got from there I'm going to head back and loot it some more, once I reach it I'll try using those words.

Edit: After re-exploring I got behind the door again and used "Shut up" and it worked, looting that dungeon will be a lot easier now.
