"Magnetism" in combat

Good in large battles to avoid those pesky "Oh [censored] I killed Jauffre" moments, but may get a bit annoying when you're alone.

Thoughts on it?

I think that's only going to be on consoles. Personally I never had a problem with hitting a team mate. Just don't randomly swing and you'll be fine. I really don't understand the point of that feature in the first place.

How? Sorry I'm, really confused by the bolded statement.

Good point. It would make more sense there.

As I stated, I think it would just get annoying, but I'll be on PC so I'm good.

What I really meant was that there wouldn't be a purpose for it. Besides, how many of your Oblivion battles were large?

Get what I'm saying?

Only Kavatch and Bruma really, but I wasn't thinking that. When no one is around would you even notice it? You still haven't explained how it would be annoying... It's not playing specifics but genuine curiosity.

I hadn't heard about this magnetism before, so I did a quick read-up. In essence it is a smart auto-aim feature? I think that sounds great, honestly, even if it applies to ranged attacks as well. Not to provoke the angry hard-core gamer-hydra, but Elder Scrolls is a little more chill than more action-oriented RPGs. Often I will switch to third person during melee combat to get a more cinematic effect, and often I don't want to exert the extra mental effort to go into "hard-core focus mode" to land all of my attacks (I might add that I tend to use a very acrobatic fighting style.) In first person, melee aiming is too simple for this to be an issue in solo combat, but hopefully it is not overly noticeable. Sounds lazy, I know, but I'm assuming the magnetism is an extremely subtle effect (otherwise it does not sound at all attractive.) Which actually brings me to the pertinent question: Does magnetism actually adjust your aim, or simply keep you from hitting unintended targets?

Really a personal thing. I think it would be annoying to have my weapon drawn towards the enemy for me.

Imagine your fighting two trolls. One is just about to die, so you move in to take that finishing move and bam! Your sword magically snaps to the other troll and you get owned. That would be annoying. VERY Annoying.

I don't think you would even notice it to be honest, it's not like I ever missed in Oblivion anyways.

what is interesting to me about this, and I wasn't aware because I hadn't read the Feb Playstation article

is the fact that ZOMFG THERE WILL BE LARGE BATTLES! :celebration: :celebration:

I'm picturing the bloodthirsty Rebel faction forces approaching a huge well-defended keep at the edge of a picturesque mountain pass, held by a garrison of Loyalists dogs.

Probably not. As long as it doesn't literally adjust my aim, I'm fine. If it does, mod please.

Bethesda has a very different definition of "large" then the average person. Don't give your hopes up.

I really hope it is a full scale war and not just doing pointless sabotage missions for one side.

It will somehow avoid friendly fire is all we really know. We're speculating as to exactly what it will do at other times.

Miracles.

Seriously though, I think Magnetism in combat is misunderstood right now. I'm fairly certain it's not going to be a "Homing attack" like many people are assuming. I just think, in battles where there are allies an enemies (Since we now know Companions are going to be more common), if your companion or ally happens to get "Near" your target, as is very common in melee, the game's combat will never strike the ally as long as their "Hit box" occupies the same space as a hostile target.

So the only real way you'll notice it, is if in a battle, you decide to intentionally attack your ally. If he's too close (IE right next to) the combat engine will register your weapon colliding with the original hostile target instead.

That's how I interpret it anyway. I'm pretty sure if it was Auto-sighting, it'd be called auto-sighting.

This is along the lines of what I'm thinking. I remember still the battle of Bruma. I think I killed more guards than the Daedra did.

If your ally is in the way don't swing. It's that simple. I blame the horrible combat system in OB for the whole "hitting your friends too much" thing. When all you can do is aimlessly swing your weapon back and forth you stop caring about timing and accuracy

I probably did too.

That battle could've been great, but it was ridiculous.
