main hand / off hand? or ambidextrous?

Post » Thu Dec 09, 2010 1:56 am

We know dual wielding is in, what are your thoughts on how it will/should be implemented? Will you have a main hand and off hand? Will you be less proficient with your off hand, and only able to use smaller weapons with it? Will your proficiency be based on a skill or perk? Or automatically ambidextrous?

Just PLEEEAASE bethesda, let me make a left handed character!! As a left handed person, I HATE that I am always forced to play right handed! It is especially a problem with shooters, but I seem to remember older FPS games (maybe turok?) would give you the option of having your weapon on the left side. I can't describe how much this helps with immersion!

I'd assume so, since you can now assign weapons, spells and shields to each hand.

Good point, but it seems to me, to be an issue they would only address if they have the time. I say this because if the character were to be ambidextrous its not a game breaking issue. It would be nice though if the skills such as block, magicka, blade etc. were made more proficient the more you used them with a specific hand, and they could also allow you to choose your strong arm(left/right handed) during character creation.

It'd be a nice touch if it was possible, but I can see them adding damage penalties to off-hand attacks just like Dual Wield systems in other fantasy games for balancing reasons.

Also, random trivia for the day. Link from Legend of Zelda is left-handed.

I would assume your ability to dual wield would be dependant on your agility attribute (if its in), your athleticism skill (if its in), and improved by perks.

But with those things possibly being gone, I guess it would all rely on your perks...

I just hope your right hand isn't defaulted as your "main" hand!

With spells I doubt you'll get a penalty for having equipped one spell to one hand instead of the other.

For weapons I hope they base it on your strength so that you can choose to use one heavy hammer or two small hammers of half weight but not too heavy hammers.

For shields, I want dual shields in the game but not to be very practical, shields should offer large defensive advantages and the ability to create openings but not much else.

This, and yes, it is somewhat implied in one of the GI articles little combat stories that there is shield bash.

I too would like to make a lefty or ambidextrous (perk?) character.

Then there could be a damage penalty for the weapon in the off-hand and a strength requirement for dual-wielding weapons of a certain weight.

It would be a nice touch to personalize your creation a little more...

Duel cross bows would be perfectly doable.

I heard somewhere that you can shield bash in Skyrim.
No reference though.

Assuming crossbows are in, how would you load them? With your teeth?

Beth likes to give options.

Id bet that its possible, unless it would screw up the character animations.

Remember TES is also a 3rd person game. Seems like it would easy to flip and fix, but I aint no expert.

You can put any weapon in any hand (so I imagine weapon in left hand, shield in right) is definitely possible. The GI article also said shield bash was in.

I really do not care whether they showed only your right arm or your left as t he main one, all the time. Not because I am ambidexterous (I am not), but it is a fantasy game. I am 'more' right-handed than left, so if B wanna make characters appear wielding main weapons always on left hand, I couldn't care less. Nice if we get both, but if not....

There is a shield bash, and that would be epic.

I've always played a left-handed character. The only reason I used my right-hand was to give the beasties a chance :D
