Main quest; Can I avoid fighting the other factions?

Hi guys,

So I've been loving F4. I support the Minutemen, the Railroad and the Brotherhood (although I've joined them I haven't started the Brotherhood campaign as I'm saving that for another playthrough). The Minutemen helped me get into the Institute but I'm actively supporting the Railroad, having said I'll work with them after getting back from the institue for the first time. I gave the holodisk to them as well as Sturges, but Preston nor Sturges have given me any more quests.

I just got to the Battle for Bunker Hill mission (after warning the Railroad) where I was dismayed to see Railroad and Brotherhood fighting each other. So I consulted a guide that showed the outcome of the different endings and now I don't want to play anymore.

If I want to continue to support the Railroad I have to turn on the Brotherhood?! My god, what would Veronica think of me?!

When I play the Brotherhood in my next playthrough, which I've been looking forward to, I'll have to wipe out the Railroad?!

No. I won't do it. I'd literally rather not play the game any more.

Is there a peaceful ending? Or can I finish the game and destroy the Institute and not turn on any of the other three factions?

Thanks.

It is possible to play through and end non-hostile with the Minutemen, the Brotherhood, and the Railroad. You basically have to play through each faction's storyline until they tell you to turn on one of the others, and then switch direction. The Brotherhood will actually set you hostile to the Railroad when you turn in one quest, so be prepared to reload when that happens. I don't recall the exact combination of quests, but it's almost all of them. I think you have to get kicked out the Institute eventually, and then take the Institute out with the Minutemen. It's been a while though, so I could be wrong.

Bottom line: you can do it.

What you described is the Minutemen ending, do it, and you only have to be hostile toward the Institute. Either free or kill the synths then being aggressive to Father after the Battle at Bunker Hill then you will be kick out and start the Minutemen ending where BoS faction and RR mini-faction will both be alive.

You can.

It's my preferred ending, but it has a couple of minor downsides.

This is the 'formula':

Fallout 4 - 3 faction ending Starting point:

Brotherhood of Steel: Complete Blind Betrayal, but don't talk to Maxson back at the Prydwen yet.

Institute: Don’t progress Mass Fusion.

Minutemen: Move Preston to Sanctuary (for convenience)

Railroad: Don’t progress Underground Undercover.

Steps:

  1. Start Mass Fusion by talking to Allie Filmore, but inform the Brotherhood

  2. Start and complete Spoils of War.

  3. Talk to Desdemona to progress Burning Cover.

  4. Go talk to Preston to complete Burning Cover.

  5. Get hold of the holotape from Inside Job (if not already done).

  6. Hand in Blind Betrayal but avoid Captain Kells.

  7. Give Sturges the tape, talk to Preston and complete Defend the Castle.

  8. Complete the Nuclear Option with the Minutemen

A couple of really minor inconsistencies as this is not an 'official' solution.

  • Spoiler

    • Glory will wander around the Railroad silently (alive) despite being discussed as if she was dead.

    • PAM will send you on missions to kill rogue Brotherhood (despite them being allies).

Actually you can kill them and the Brotherhood (generally) won't mind.

Phew, thanks guys. Can keep playing now.

Sofajockey, with your formula do I have to play the Brotherhood missions? I was planning not to do them this playthrough. And does it get around Preston's quests to attack the Prydwyn with cannons? What do I do when that comes up?

Cheers again.

You don't have to do any faction quests if you don't want to, as soon as you become hostile to the Institute, you start the Institute quest. It has nothing to do with the BoS, the BoS will only become hostile if you kill a named member, otherwise, they're friendly with the Minutemen, but the game will assume you did the BoS quests and will treat it as such. If you complete the Minutemen ending, Haylen will thank you for saving Danse regardless of whether you do it or not, but it's up to you if you want to do BoS quests.
