Will the completion of the main story quest been necessary in order to play the upcoming DLC next month?
If so, what faction will you choose?

Hard to imagine a side being needed. The only side which might get additional content would be railroad, as they are into that robots are people.
All that being said, I don't plan on finishing the main quest until the kit comes out and I can alter the ending.
I'll do one of each with different characters, but if I had to pick one it'd be as Director.
Not really, Synths are not robots. They if memory serves are abominations. Hence the whole wasteland whisperer working on them, or so I have heard.
As for the brotherhood, their only interest would be getting their grubby hands on the tech.
I doubt faction affiliation will play into Automatron - it might change some dialog in Far Harbor, but that's it. They definitely won't require us complete the main quest so that we can deal with the Mechanist and build our own battle bots.
For Automatron? Highly doubt it. I would think its an entirely separate plot of its own. Or if anything, appear as a really extensive side quest or two.
Now Far Harbor, I can see something. Probably won't require anything, though I can imagine some minor references being made to events of the main questline, similar to Dragonborn with Skyrim, but that's about it. Doubt anything major will tie into that either.
for me if i want a DLC focus on a faction will be BoS or Instituted. I doubt that it will ever happen since 1 they need to make a DLC that fit the 4 faction and 2 it will feel really similar between factions.?+
I think the close we can get is cameos from the factions that all.
