Main Story Rewards?

Post » Sat Jul 23, 2011 10:16 am

I've never quite understood why people are so averse to doing the main quest. It's not like the game ends after it's over, and it's not like you have to do it all in one sitting. I always did a little here, did a little there, in between sidequests and dungeon crawls.

Nothing to Look forward to though. wasted time. imo

But how so? The main quest is finished, doesn't mean the game is over. Unlike FO3 where I made sure all my sidequests were finished before I did the MQ because the game ended afterwards, there's an open world after the story is over. It isn't necessary to make sure EVERYTHING is finished before the main quest is.

Whatevs.

Well, I don't really want them to do this, but one way is to punish the player for not completing the main quest in a timely fashion. For example if you wanted Oblivion players to hurry up with the MQ, slowly have Oblivion gates pop up everywhere, so much so that there is not a single point in the map in which the sky isn't red and the battle music isn't playing.

If that's not incentive enough, I don't know what is.

O.O

This would svck.

You should get:

1. A stuffed dragon head to mount above the fireplace in your home.

2. An NPC that is so obsessed with you that they volunteer to be your unpaid servant.

3. A pretty pony that wears horse armor.

4. Become the count of some small hamlet out in the middle of nowhere. Rule as you see fit.

5. Wenches and booze... gotta have lots of wenches and booze. EDIT: or men and booze (forgot to be politically correct)

How about they just make the main quest a bit more interesting? I prefer games that end, once the main quest is done, the game is over. I usually do complete all of the side questing first, and I had no issues with the Oblivion MQ. It was fine. Not astonishing, but fine. The reward for it didn't matter, because that was my "game over."

But that would mean that in a way, the devs are forcing the player to do the main quest. I thought ignoring the main quest was part of the "basically do anything you want" feature in a TES sandbox game?

Everyone is forgetting that Bethesda said you should complete Oblivion's main quest when you're around level 12. They wanted you to complete the main quest first and then go out and explore everything. That's why the main quest's reward svcked. You were only supposed to be a low level when you received it.

I do really think the main quest for Skyrim should have a very grand reward or at least something worth having. Maybe an object that unlocks an area or that allows you to do something you weren't able to do earlier. And Skyrim's main quest really should allow you to do it when you want, the reward should be fulfilling for every player, no matter their combat style or level.

Indeed. Even the initiation into the Mages Guild provides a choice. And the armor you get is Heavy Armor, meaning it's absolutely useless for mages or stealth-based characters. Besides the achievement on consoles, there's no real reason to even start the MQ.

Its only heavy if your character's Heavy Armor skill is higher than your Light Armor skill. Vice-versa.

Exactly. At which point the player would either stop playing, or complete the main quest as soon as possible.

Ah. That I did not know. Thanks!

Main Quest rewards should be equal to anything else you can come by.

If the fighter guild gives out something with a claymore that has a +10 2 handed skill enchant on it, i want something equal to that (not necessarily the same thing)

That's all, Equality so when i'm playing i feel i really CAN play whatever the way i want.

Also, no feeling of being pushed into the Main Story like in Oblivion, Morrowind did this soooo much better it isn't funny.

Just wanna say something. I see Dwarven armor and weapons and wtf else. But NO DWARVES.. wtf.

Dwarves are extinct. We see dinosaur bones laying around doesn't necessarily mean they're alive

Sorry, but that is quite possibly the worst idea I've ever seen posted on this forum.

I'm not even kidding.

Meh. Once you've beaten the Main Bad Guy, what do you need Fancy Bonus Gear for? I'm fine with the acclaim of the people?. :)

I'm not averse to doing the MQ.... I always do it on my first character in a new game. But on subsequent characters.... it depends. In Oblivion, I tend to ignore it because I'd rather run around the world exploring (and/or trying out whatever new mods I've installed) without having the place cluttered up by those tedious Oblivion Gates. Fallout 3.... I'll pick up a part of the quest here and there, as I wander around doing other things.

(Now, I'm with you on not understanding people who don't do the MQ on their first character and/or not at all. Why even buy a game if you're not going to bother with it's content? Just because it's "open world, do what you want" doesn't mean that it doesn't have a story that they kind of hoped/intended that you'd see. :))

I would want the one thing that certain JRPGS actually did to entertain me: Unlocking supremely long and difficult bonus bosses and bonus dungeons post main quest.

What I'd like to see personally is more recognition from world npcs, one way or the other.

Getting applauded in the streets, receiving gifts(even if its just small things like useless cosmetics, food and drinks(imagine going into a bar and not having to pay for a single mug of ale), or even flowers) and getting harassed or attacked by people who disagree with your decisions. If I roleplay a hero I wanna feel like a hero.

Edit: The last thing I want is to be forced to do the main quest, but that's not gonna happen.

I'm inclined to think this. It felt like to me, in Oblivion at least, finishing the main quest was its own reward. No more Oblivion gates, world is saved, evil is (momentarily) thwarted.

That's because Dwarves are slaves in the ES universe, and they are so little seeing one is almost impossible!

I saw one, but i'm not telling you where!

true, but i'm sure most people will just play through to the point where they learn how to use the shouts(doesn't make any sense to access right at beginning), pick up some words and souls, and run towards whatever other little quest they decide is more important.

maybe a special perk and you can choose from like 10 different ones, maybe view all locations or half the materials for armor sets. Something that makes you want to play for even longer, instead of a overpowered sword that one hit kills everything

If we compare the skyrim dragons to the oblivion gates, surely shouts are better rewards than the sigil stones. No idea if this is a fair comparison though.
