Post » Wed Apr 16, 2014 7:24 pm

Hello everybody!!

So having recently acquired a new computer there comes the usual essential tools that must be downloaded. The one that I wanted to discuss is the PC maintenance software. So, I just wanted to ask all of you fine folk: what is your favourite software that can perform those cleaning tasks??

And yes, I'm looking for suggestions on what to get haha.

Thanks!!

PS: if its free, its even better.

All I use is https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner for those old/bad registrys and https://www.piriform.com/defraggler once or twice a year to defrag my harddrive.

EDIT: As promised. Here is a list of free maintenance programs http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1415492-a-freeware-guide-v3/?hl=+freeware. Scroll down to the maintenance portion.

Yeah, i was using CCleaner before, but ive had past experience of some run.dll being deleted. Naturally it may just happen by itself and not being anything due to the program but im still a little wary of using it again.

A couple of pretty good links for your pc needs.

For general pc maintenance, I tend to use Wisecare 365, CCleaner, and Auslogics

It wouldn't hurt to invest in a good antivirus/antispyware either.

CCleaner here too...i thing it's a very good utility. The free version do a very good job.

I use it for years. !!!

I don't use any HDD de-fragment tools as i own two SSD's...

I thing there is an option to backup your registry every time you do the check.

----------

Beside Ccleaner i don't use any other programs except my Symantec Endpoint Antivirus.

Sometimes less is more.

CCleaner, but there's really no need for using its registry cleaner. You can think of the registry as a database, removing lines from it doesn't do anything useful unless its ridiculously big and removing lines from it can have negative effects. Granted, over the years when I have used it, only once was there negative side-effects, but given it doesn't really do anything of benefit, it is silly to do nonetheless.

I use JkDefrag for defragging.

Actually exactly that is what CCleaner does.

It's not fixing anything, but it can't harm anything either. (in most cases anyway. !!!!) lol

If your new rig has multiple drives, especially if your primary drive is an SSD, or if you just want to make sure that CC Cleaner gets all the temporary files, then see these links. You can add them in the Options for the Program, where you can list custom locations to include in the cleaning.

And, if you want to change the location of My Documents to preserve your SSD Drive, if you have it, see this:

You shouldn't be. If you suspect that it may be deleting files you don't want it to, you can always set up an exception for them. Auslogics has a couple of good, free utilities you should look at as well. There's a disc defragger that can be set to run whenever your computer is idle, plus a registry cleaner. They also have a free registry defragger. Another good registry cleaner is Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. I use that first, then the Auslogics one and by the time I get around to using the one that CCleaner offers, there's usually nothing left to fix. Also get Revo Uninstaller, it does a much better job of removing any programs from your system than the Windows version. You can tell it to look for any remaining registry entrie and folder, and it will remove those as well.

That's not what my experience has been like. When I started using a registry cleaner, I noticed a definite improvement in performance. The more useless entries you have in it, the longer it's going to take your system to go through it all and find the file you actually want.

Not really, though it has that option. Mainly it removes temporary files that aren't being used by anything anymore, and left over internet files. It does have a registry cleaner which you have to select, but both Eusings and the one by Auslogics do a much better job of doing that, especially Eusing's.

I use CCleaner, Auslogics Disk Defrag, AVG Antivirus, Spybot: S&D (some say it's unnecessary, although I find that it still turns up spyware when I run it), and Malwarebytes. Might be missing 1 or 2 in that list, but those are my primary ones.

As far as Spybot goes, I use an old version (I believe it's version 1.6.2). The newer versions are really bloated and don't do the one thing that I actually want it to do particularly well.
