Major and minor key: Which appeals more?

Post » Thu Oct 01, 2015 9:07 pm

I like music in minor keys more, but then again I prefer melancholic music over others. Was wondering if people generally prefer minor to major keys in music? Or are they actually the same in terms of preference? I'm no music expert, so its possible that this has nothing to do with the keys at all, and its to do with how the music is played, e.g a piece of music with a major key can sound sad.

I vaguely remember someone telling me this, but I'm not so sure.

If you've ever heard the intro to Yoshi's Island, I think that's a good example of a "sad" major key. Granted, it transitions into minor for a bittersweet effect toward the end of the loop, but for the most part it's pretty sad.

Oh, and Epona's Song is a great example of that too: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MBU2IJ1Mnjw

Although the major key kind of bounces in and out of its minor counterpart, so it might be kind of pseudo-major "sad" if that makes sense.

And people have different interpretations for keys. As an example of that, check out Auriel's Ascension, one of Oblivion's pieces. I think it's really sad, but some don't.

In general, I like a good mix of the two to be honest, but I love when a composer makes a minor piece that sounds more triumphant than sad or depressing.

Generally speaking, I prefer minor key. But there are so many other factors that affect my reaction to a piece of music that I'd say it's fairly insignificant.

Dunno. Bit of a mixture for me, I think. I think my biggest overdose of minor keys was the Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always. Here's a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnmeRBhezP8.

Probably minor since I prefer gloomy, sad, depressive music. Oh, and I prefer angry music. Happy or positive sounding music often irritates me unless the music is something like Sabaton. Songs about war with a more positive sound don't bother me as much. Comedy songs usually don't bother me.

As a response to your uplifting song, here's some songs that are even more uplifting:

Spoiler
I actually linked to two funeral doom metal songs. These might lead to minor note poisoning.

Wow, Epona's Song sounds quite disturbing, unintentionally. I thought Epona was some kind of alien female at first. Then I went to google it, bahaha.

You got me. I was expecting teletubbies or the sort. I like the Pantheist one a lot though, thanks for that.

"Why Not Both?"

Seriously, I just like whatever music I happen to be in the mood for, regardless of what key it's in. As said, there's plenty of melancholy music in major keys. Usually that has more to do with tempo. Even major and minor are kind of broad terms. There are different "flavors" of major (technically they're called modes) for example. Always loves me a little mixolydian rock (think "Sweet Home Alabama", "Paradise City", tons of Beatles songs, even Lorde's "Royals"). And most blues and rock songs are actually built on the tension between minor and major, like playing a minor scale over a major chord progression.

Of course having said all that, everyone knows D minor is the https://youtu.be/NgViOqGJEvM.
