No Major Quests Playthrough

Post » Sat Jan 04, 2014 9:40 pm

Anyone ever done a playthrough where you completely ignored the following questlines:

-Main Quest

-Dawnguard

-Dragonborn

-Civil War

-Thieve's Guild

-Dark Brotherhood

-Companions

-College of Winterhold

I'm not going to count the Daedra quests among them because I don't feel like they're an actual story-arc, just a group of random quests concerning the Daedra lords.

What did you do during the playthrough and what quests did you seek out? I want to do one, but I'm afraid my character won't have anything to do.

I've never done that. I don't think I ever will, because it takes away too much content from the game.

That's all my playthroughs actually! Just did them once then ignored them.

I had a lot of fun with my guard, he married Balimund and all his playthrough was doing the radiant quest the Jarl gave him.

So pretty much I do radiant quest, or just don't touch any quest aside from the ones that open up marriage choices.

*cough cough* Oblivion Main Questline *cough cough*

Worst questline ever. It's not like Skyrim, where you're the only one who can do these quests. In Oblivion, there are countless people more qualified than the PC.

I'm not sure if this is what OP had in mind, but a decent compromise might be to do the "random" quests from the guilds, but avoid the quests that follow the main story arc.

The point of the questline was that you were in the right place in the right time, the only other person to know that the there is another heir is the head of the blades and the blades survivor of the tutorial. IMO, I love the questline, one of the few fantasy games where you are not some prophesied hero, or amazing person, etc. Your character is, as far as the players know, a nobody with no connection to any god, scroll, special talent, yet he ends up helping to save Tamriel. The PC is also not supposed to be the main character of the story, Martin is

I for one do not think that I could do that. That is not what Skyrim is about, at least to me. All the quests you listed are tied into everything else, and Skyrim would not be Skyrim without them. Hope that made sense.

I don't think an Imperial Prison is the right place, I think I deserved a pardon for delivering the amulet and not pawning it. XD

I haven't touched the main quest or civil war in over a year at least.

There is a lot of stuff to do and explore in Skyrim even while ignoring all those quest lines. There are not just the Daedric quests but also doing all the Jarl's favors and the quests you pick from the townsfolks and random encounters around the map as you explore. I have a merchant character who doesn't fights (rather is always with a bodyguard when she goes to any dungeon) and she is focused on making Potions and Jewelry for selling to stores. She travels across Skyrim to harvest ingredients and find precious stones to use for her crafting. I left her quite rich, married to Camilla Valerius and living a life of luxury with houses in both Solitude and Markarth. I could have kept going more but I felt that I had done what I wanted to do with the character. Had lots of fun.

that is pretty doable and you won't really be mission out really. I mean you go through all the steps in doing these MQ's and end up with very little reward or reasoning to have gone through such arduous tasks ;p

I agree, I actually liked the Oblivion main quest for these reasons.

Bethesda makes up for your lack of importance and power by letting you become Sheogorath. But of course that isn't canon and is left open to interpretation.

I do it often in all of these games. I've done it twice in Skyrim so far. In fact my first character was a "No-Beth-quest" character. I played her for 300+ hours, up to something like level 50 or so. My other lasted maybe 200+ hours to level 35 or 40. This is one of my favorite ways to play the Elder Scrolls games.

I kind of want to give this a try on my next playthrough, though in all honesty I wouldn't really know what to do. At least with quests I had some sort of guide but I'm kind of tired of cycling through the same quests, since there really isn't a whole lot offered. I swear Oblivion had plenty more, especially side quests. Add in avoiding shouts and basically any "dragonborn" stuff, and there's like really not a whole lot left. Another thing with Oblivion was that if I wanted to avoid doing the main quest I could, and not be worried about getting reminded or shoehorned into it one way or another (like with finding shouts in dungeons, the civil war as another example if one so chooses to join it, and plenty more).

I'm using my alternate start mod right now; none of the main questlines have begun yet and frankly it's quite fresh air.

For now, my character has entered Skyrim from Morrowind, near Refugees' Rest. The first city he settled in was Windhelm; there he did all the quests that interested him, like helping the Argonians, catching the Butcher and others. Then he went west, Winterhold; there he did nothing as he wasn't interested in the place, too cold for him, and he's not a magic user. He carried on westward, Dawnstar; there he met Erandur and helped him with the Nightmares and probably did a few quests for the folk, I don't remember well. Then Solitude, where he made almost all the quest available out there, mainly helping the citizen not the "important folk", except for the Wolf queen, and he has not finished over there. Etc. etc.

You won't get bored at all, believe me, especially if you add to this all the exploration opportunities the game can offer, and they are numerous.

The time I did it was only a few hours. He looked like Aragorn, dessed in fur armor, used bows and a sword. I traveled from Riverwood, to Whiterun, then to Rorikstead, completing any quests I came across except major ones. I hunted when I could and made all sorts of leather armor and sold it.

In Skyrim, it's hard for me not to do a few quests in a questline. I play MQ until Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, and do CW until I finish Under Saarthal and get to marry Onmund. Besides, CW is far too complicated for me.
