Make Achievements have some gameplay effect

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:39 am

Oblivion had "sort of" achievements with the guild/faction ranks. They sometimes had and sometimes did not have gameplay effects, but were usually minor.

If anyone has played Stalker: Call of Pripyat (being an open, free-roaming FPS I think a lot of TES fans have), you know what I'm talking about.

I'd like Skyrim to expand on this. If you finish a long side-quest line, you get an achievement, but not only that. You are awarded with a gameplay element that makes sense in accordance to that.

For example, you finish the Dark Brotherhood quest line - you unlock a new, or improve an existing sneak attack mechanic. Or you are able to summon (LEVELED) assassins to help you out. Or you get some other benefit, but in turn get a penalty or are attacked on sight by certain individuals/factions.

I think that sort of thing not only adds meaning to otherwise useless achievements, but also adds more flavor and diversity to the game.

Opinions?

Achievements aren't supposed to be intertwined with the game, they are just there... so you feel all good inside.

You shouldnt get it because of the achievement. You should get it because the story line and lore, and then get the achievement because of it. You are thinking about it wrong.

And that was already in oblivion. Finish DB or MG, you got followers. Finish arena you got the annoying adoring fan. Finish other quests you get magic items and such, do other things you get skill boosts.

Yea I forgot Beth would be breaking the law if they made achievements actually have effects on the game.

Yeah the STALKER C.O.P. Achievements were actually quite nice, like having the citizens of Skadovsk giving you medical items just because you solved a certain quest.

Interestingly, some people think they are "wasting their time" if time spent gaming is not simultaneously spent earning gamerscore.

This week I should be starting my first-ever playthrough of Morrowind on Xbox/360 (should have my choice of platforms and still haven't decided which), and this someone I am thinking of thought he would have a difficult time playing it because it would not involve any achievements. Jeepers!

While I don't care if tags are in or not, I quite like the Mass Effect system. Make the tag, get a perk.

I would prefer in-game rewards not linked to the 'achievements' system, personally. Which they already have. It'd be nice to have more creative in-game rewards, though.

I'm not interested in ticking off arbitrary boxes as I make my way through the game, and usually try to disable notifications about achievements... I like it if NPC's talk about the things I have achieved, but that's a different story.

Achievements are there to extend us console player's e-peens, they shouldn't have an effect on gameplay.

I'd be okay with this if, and ONLY if, it happened naturally as a result of playing the game or completing objectives given to the player by NPCs for quest-related reasons. I do not want a static list of achievements which, if fulfilled, give me perks in-game. If they make it part of the game through quests or guild errands or something, or if I can accidentally do it by collecting enough of an item without knowing I'm doing anything with a reward (and even then only if it's explained somehow in the game and not just arbitrary,) then that's fine. But I don't want my fourth wall being broken anymore than it already is.

You are really thick if that's how you are interpreting my post

I am calling them achievements because of a lack of a better word. It doesn't have to be shared or paraded in front of your friends to show them how much of a nerd you are. Stalker C.O.P. did an excellent job at this and this is something that Beth could use and build upon.

I also wanted to point out that the game in question is a PC ONLY GAME AND I AM A PC ONLY PLAYER. None of the achievements are shared anywhere with any friend list or site. So please get out of that herp derp mentality.

You guys need to look at it in a different way. You're not getting this "in game reward" for the achievement. That would totally break immersion. Whatever this "reward" is you should get it whether there is a achievement or not. As in, if I complete that long quest chain I should get a reward. It shouldn't be "okay, I gotta get this achievement so I can get that one item." It's the same thing, just looking at it from a different angle.

No.

Achievements are completing certain tasks and should not be attached to something in the game other than that.

I believe some of you are confusing two types of achievements:

There's the achievements like on Playstation Network or XBox Live (run 10miles, jump 100 times, finish 20 quests), and there are in-game achievements (save the damsel in distress, get medicine for the someone).
Let's call the first A and the second B.

Obviously, type A should have zero effect on gameplay. Nada. Zilch. Squat.

The latter however, definitely should:
The lady you rescued might have valueable information (being a quest-start), or the person you got medicine with will grant you a bonus in one way or another.

If executed correctly, which I believe Bethesda can do, it would definitely increase immersion, variation and overall value of the game.

Well, not really. One of the quests where you solved the crime after several quests, you got the "Detective" Achievement, which made people drop random medical supplies at your stash every couple of days. This is hardly a perk, but I think it's really interesting and immersive.

I really like achievments, it's the one element that gives the xbox 360 player something that the PC person doesn't have. lol.

Yeah, the mission about the "Missing Stalkers". In a way these gives a small achievement system to quests other then the main quest, so it is just as rewarding to go out and find and complete side-quests. Well that is how I see it.

Steam for PC. Trophies for PS3. Actually the same thing.

On-topic: Are these "achievements" available every playthrough?

Yes, all achievements are available on every playthrough, I just think it makes it something to reward the player to do the side-quests in my views.

So basically bonuses?

If you keep calling it achievements people will resist.

I agree, it was sort of a better way than, say, giving you 4000 RU or an item at the end of the quest and calling it a day.

Similarly this can be used in Skyrim.

Well the game called them Achievements. But they aren't anything like the [censored] stuff I see in other games. If people would actually READ the topic there would be nothing to resist about.
