Make blunts more useful.

Post » Sat Nov 27, 2010 10:29 am

We can all openly admit blunts were useless compared to blades. Is there anything Bethesda said about blunts? I found them utterly useless due to the fact that swords are faster, sure blunts do more damage, but it's not worth it due to the speed and the difference in damage is so little. I really hope they made pros and cons for Blade and Blunt.

I believe that each of the classes-- Blunts, Blades, and Axes-- have special abilities associated with them in Skyrim. Todd said something about it in a Q&A Interview podcast.

Blades can cause Critical Hits, Blunts can ignore (some?) enemy armor, and Axes cause bleeding damage. :)

Hope that helps!

On a related note, I would like to say that I've never found Blunts to be worthless. They dealt a fair bit of damage in both Morrowind and Oblivion, and I used them with several of my characters. I suppose it's possible that the best sword in the respective game was better than the best blunt weapon in that game, but sometimes it's just more fun to beat someone to a bloody pulp with a mace than to find the weak points in their armor with a blade. :)

I didn't know swords did more damage... But anyways, I heard somewhere that there was going to be something where axes do bleed damage and maces have more knock back power and swords have something else. I don't remember what each one was but if that is implemented, then that should add a little more balance

edit: Ok the guy above me got it. Pay no attention to what I said about maces

In Oblivion, Blunts did higher damage than Swords, but they swinged slower. They just barely did more damage though. Umbra had the highest base damage of any one-handed weapon, it did as much as a Daedric Warhammer, which is the most damaging two-handed weapon in the game (Base damage, that is, not including enchantments, etc)

Two Handed Blunts don't do enough damage to justify the increased weight and much slower swing speed.

Actually (not wanting to seem like a [censored] here or anything so remember, tone of voice isn't transferable over the intarwebz) Instead of having Blade or Blunt they're going to have weapons divided into "one-handed weapons" and "two-handed weapons". Don't hold me to this, but I would guess they did this to make it easier to set up the dual wielding system. But Skyrim is also gonna have perks from what I understand, and each different type of weapon will have perks you can choose for the affects the person above me mentioned.

Makes sense. Blunts were made to hurt through armor, do to the energy ignoring the metal (look up newton balls). Possibly Heavy armor will have a huger knockback than light.

You can't smoke weed in TES...<--- first thing i thought of when i saw the topic

But I digress, it doesn't matter in this game. everything is being lumped into 1h and 2h, but yeah there should be more really cool blunt weapons

Haha don't feel bad. There isn't a way to effectively use blunt. I actually compared a sword to an axe and the axe did one point more damage for more than twice the weight of the sword. Plus an axe doesn't have as long range as a sword. It's just not a good weapon system.

Which is why I'm excited for 1h and 2h weapons with dual wielding. Axe in one hand, short sword in the other. Spank kids.

They can make them logically faster by making them smaller. Of course the blunt weapons in Oblivion are useless. Those heads are massive!

Even regardless of which skills you used, blade-type weapons were still better than blunt-type weapons, and it would still be possible for this to be the case even with the new system. Has anyone ever used a club for instance? Hopefully each type has its own tactical advantages though (due to the critical strike, bleeding or ignore armour factors possibly).
