Make Good Mods for Skyrim on PC, into DLC for console player

Post » Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:57 am

Fixing incompatibilities between mods is not a trivial task. I shudder to think of having to audit all the complex code in mods like OOO, Midas Magic, or the archery mod that inspired Skyrim's new archery system. Not that those specific ones conflict necessarily or that they are spaghetti code, its just that auditing uncommented and not necessarily pretty code written by strangers with varying levels of coding skill is about as fun as having hot pokers applied to my sensitive bits. I'd feel sorry for whichever poor bastards get stuck with that thankless nightmare.

It pissed you off? Since when was Bethesda obligated to bring you additional DLC?

I don't like the mindset I see in some console players that they are somehow entitled to mods, and that Bethesda is trying to keep mods away from them or something, or that they are obligated to make them available to console players. If you desire mods so much, no one is stopping you from getting a PC. Otherwise, be happy with the vanilla game and official DLC.

Well, I do know that there are mods for PC users that should say on the PC. But one's that expand and enrich the story such as (Rebuilding Kvatch...hate using this constantly but it's the best one to quote from) Anyway, I understand that the PC experience will probably always be better due to the limitless potential with mods. But, I thought it would be great to REBUILD the city, like real life, instead of leaving it as a constantly burning and smoldering ruin forever [In game] with everyone who survived just standing around dumbfounded. I'm not trolling, I know that this game was a new venture for Bethesda but, if the potential existences...why not share it!

The obvious problems, someone created a mod that has a cell that uses more memory than the amount of RAM a console has; then there's nothing you can do about that, short of deleting everything so it'll fit.

They are for next-gen, but ultimately it's up to M$ and Sony. Sony would probably be okay with it, considering that, unless I'm mistaken, there's already user made content on games such as Little Big Planet 2. It's M$ that would probably not be very keen on the idea of users getting free anything.

I like the idea of console users getting to experience mods, but there's a lot to take into account. From pricing, to implementing a way to get the mods to players, to technical issues.

...And if Microsoft doesn't allow free downloads, Bethesda won't allow Sony to have mods as free downloads, correct? :(

I can't even imagine a console running Open Better Cities without exploding. I've got a relatively decent computer, and using mods like Frostmourne Sword and OBC simultaneously would result in CTDs.

so you mean all the hi-res textures and models mods will be ported to console; oh wait the console is why we have low res textures and models. and what about things like obse and obge they can enhance the game a lot but they would never be allowed on console.

All this talk of buying mods or being paid for modding... my gut reactionis "awwwh, hell nawh!"

Think about it both ways... of course you will grudgingly accept money for your mods (though it pains you) but would you ever part with your sweet, sweet currency for a mod by someone else? Personally for me (as a downloader of HUNDREDS of mods) - very rarely. Only the best would get my money- for me, I could imagine shelling out for deadly reflex, the FCOM collection, Curse of Hicrine and probably a few more... but not many. Mods that I have loved and used constantly would never have made my load order (better cities, unnoficial patches, clothing/armor mods, realism mods) and budding modders would be cut out of the picture. What happens then is no one is motivated to learn to be better- sure the amazingly talented would get the money that they ultimatly deserve, but Im guessing (if everyone is as tight as me) that it would also kill off the modding community.

There's that, and the whole "spirit of christmas" thing... you know... its all about the giving and the sharing and the brotherly love, right? Haha, you have to admit there is something great about leaving real life industry behind for website where people are giving away/showing off things with one hand and downloading other peoples stuff with the other... sometimes because they see it and they want it, other times just to say "well done" other times out of curiosity/ because they can... theres something awesome about that, right? .. What, you'd rather have the money? ok....

Yes I would never buy a mod for a game on XBL that was fan made. Mostly because it would be Msoft making the profit, whereas most people think that the mod maker would get a majority of the money.

For me, personally, I plan on sticking with the only DLC Bethesda creates themselves.

will never ever happen with anything but the most simple tweaks. having been an avid mod user and self-modder myself for years you never know what you are going to get with mods. sometimes they are not well optimized. i cant begin to count the number of mods that ended up being revamped a year or two later with better coding by some other author. the "best" mods often use script extenders and other third party software that require a full OS or at least more of it or python etc. consoles only have a barebones setup. maybe for the next gen but anything remotly complicated isnt going happen on this generation for sure.

im also willing to bet that sony is going to keep a very tight lid on what they allow on their systems and networks after their latest fiasco. and we all know that microsoft will not let people get anything for free.
