Make magic impact the enviroment and the world?

Post » Fri Apr 16, 2010 3:25 pm

Hello everyone :D

I was just wondering, how cool would it be having magic change, alter, destroy enviroment!? I would love this, make every object, trees, tables and so on vulnerable to different magic types. If the player casts a fireball onto something flammable the object will burn and collapse, much like laser guns turning enemies to ashes in fallout 3 :D! I think this could be used for an advantage to the player, having the enviroment play a big role in the way magic can be used. Lightning spells, does 2x the damage if it hits enemies in wet enviroment, frost spells can make shields of ice between objects, making enemies have to find another way around, giving the player time to restore health and mana. Just a few examples... discuss :)

As long as NPC's eventually repair battle damage and scarring (assuming their alive to do so), I'd be fine with it. I'd be annoyed though if it was handled like objects thrown around a shop in Oblivion. I don't want to have to look at that same broken table or Ice shield between chairs again and again for the rest of the game.

yeah, I didn't mean permanent, atleast not in houses, guilds and so on, let things stay broken for a week or something, than make them appear again? This could be a solution atleast. But I also wants certain things to stay broken once hit too.

Bioshock has an interesting script which replaces the texture of any mesh that has been inflicted with fire. I think it might add a whole bunch of other texture maps too.

I'm not sure how destroying static objects would work with Bethesda's new engine though.

Ah yes, burning the splicers extra crispy always gave them a unique look.

anything that improves quality of magic is fine by me :)

in fact I would love to see a massive array of spells not just lame balls all the time (fire ball, paralyze ball, light ball, ice ball, burden ball, unlock ball, weakness ball) :shakehead:

Sure, we could cast a fireball in the forest and burn down everything.

I would like to see things break when you bash, drop, impale, and otherwise abuse them but I don't think there are too many computers that can handle the strain of burning down the town you're in when your fire ball misses the dog you cast it on.

I think the gore factor should be brought waaaay up, I first played Oblivion when it came out, and there was a little bit of blood, then I got Fallout 3 when it came out, knowing it was "Oblivion in the future" (You know what I mean) and I cut Butch's head off with a switchblade. I was thinking, they need to have cool deaths in the next Elder Scrolls game!
So yes, I would love turning a bandit into a crispy corpse, or turning a guard pale blue and stiff with a frost spell, or leaving a charred skeleton with a snap of my fingers and a bolt of lightning. Also, somewhat irrelevant to the thread but, there should be limb hacking, skull popping and intestine twisting gore. Just so y'all know.

Environmentally un-friendly spells are a must :foodndrink:

The ice wall thing seems to easy to exploit, but besides that ya that would be awesome.

That would be cool. Reminds me of Far Cry 2, when you could set the plains on fire. You'd be paying a lot of fines, however, for all the destruction and mayhem you would cause, if you started firing off spells in or near town.

It probably won't happen, it would cause a lot of chaos and problems, glitches, etc... Modifying the enviromnent in such way is too extreme, I wouldn't mind some breakable/burnable objects and effects like using the water to eletrocutate enemies. But nothing massive, imagine if a random mage casts a fireball and it sets the whole forest in fire? It would break the game mechanics in many ways. Or what if you set fire in a town, breaking every quest and killing NPCs. It's too extreme for such a big sandbox game like TES.
