Just some FYI... I guess I wasnt in a exploration mood when I got to Skyhaven with my first character, and just went to the wall, the word wall, and bounced. My buddy informed me later of gear in a room off to the left. When I went back with this character to get it (post completion of the game) It was now a "steal" option instead of "take"
Im guessing this is because you fall out of favor with Esbern and Delphine by knowing of the dragon and not killing it. They make mention of it after the counsel meeting at high Hrothgar with Ulfric and Tullius.
Odd that it would switch to 'steal'. I took it the first time so never had a problem I guess. Unfortunately I was a Light Armor user so the armor was worthless to me. Loved the sword though, but now that I know it's a leveled item I won't do that part of the MQ until I'm level 46+.

I didnt check it with my original character after I saw it was a "steal" option (he was level 46), but I went and got it with my level 35 character, Dragon Bane was "35 damage to dragons, 10 shock to others" It worked amazingly well on an elder dragon I ran into outside solitude(this of course is after I got it up to like 198 in Damage after smithing/one handed fortify.)
0.o Bribe them, persuade them, kill them, run faster, or don't get caught perhaps?
Eh, Im speaking generally.
I personally try to keep my legal [censored] under wraps at the holds i frequent, and Im sure many other players do as well, so i was just mentioning a way to "rightfully" own the equipment if you missed it the first time around.
Eh...I actually think it's better to get your smithing up to 100 with the Lover's Stone and making a lot of Iron Daggers. Then you can use those Dragon Bones and Scales to create Dragonplate armor which you can use at any level. Plus, as a level 100 smith you can improve the armor to Legendary. And, you can improve any weapon or shield to Legendary. 35 of shock damage is nothing compared to my Steel Battleaxe with 81 damage. Besides...even with a low level Enchanting skill I was able to add filling a soul gem if the target dies within 5 seconds. I also have a Flawless Orcish Warhammer with 75 damage and undead upto level 14 flee for 30 seconds, plus a Flawless Falmer Bow with 39 damage which burns target 14 points. 100 smithing skill really comes in handy.

I think you misunderstood, Dragonbane does 35 additional damage points to Dragons(so the base of my weapon is 198, if i happen to be fighting a dragon, it then becomes 233) and 10 additional shock damage to everything else.
Still need to go back there with my first character and pick up the armor. Both myself and my companion were carrying too much stuff, so I only grabbed Dragonbane.

necklace/ring that increases carry is a great asset for situations like that.
