Make the day/night cycle slower..

Post » Mon Aug 02, 2010 5:17 am

Looking at the Skyrim map, Skyrim is 1/3 bigger than Oblivions world

It doesn't really appear that way for me. The land mass for each looks to be about the same.

And just to mention about the day/night cycles... I wouldn't mind something slightly slower than what Oblivion was.

When I was playing GTA San Andreas I thought it would be better if the time cycle was slower. Then, I got GTA IV, which effectively doubled the time cycle.

And you know what? The overall feeling was even worse!

So, after GTA IV I played Oblivion and I felt the day/night cycle was just right.

Because it's not about realism, but more about the feeling of living a journey. In both GTA SA and TES IV I could start a mission in the morning, and be done by the game's evening. It was really satisfying.

Instead, you could complete almost any GTA IV mission started in the morning ...at noon, if you were superslow. Most of the times I didn't notice a mayor shift from day to night in-missions.

So, if they were to add a slower clock to Skyrim, I hope it's just a bit slower than that of Oblivion.

No.

I want to be able to see changes between day and night in one sitting. If it were slower you'd start playing during the day and end during the day.

Ooooo idea!

Bethesda should simply go online and find the average speed a human walks and therefore figure out the average distance a human can travel in a 24 hour period.

Take the ratio of the average distance per 24 hours a human can cover and simply scale it down to the landscape size of Skyrim.

Adjust the real time length of in-game day accordingly.

Realistic and slower! :celebration:

I'd go with this, or just set the time to how it feels.

I also think it should be slower. I mean you almost have to slow it down now. I wouldn't want to be talking to an NPC in real time for 5 minutes in the morning and when I am finished, its already late afternoon.

I can see 45min real time being 12 hour game time.

I would also prefer if time passed a little slower. gpstr raises a valid point, but I think the time scale could be slowed down a little without it having an overly negative impact on our perception of the size of the game world. Perhaps changing the ratio from 20:1 to 15:1.

I would agree, you can't make the time scale too slow since the world is already scaled down, if time doesn't pass more quickly than real time, you could cross the map in an unrealistic amount of in-game hours, but I think the time scale can be slowed somewhat without ruining the believability of the world. Another thing to consider is that people aren't going to be playing the game non-stop, therefore you might actually want a sped up time scale to ensure that you can easily see the effects of the day/night cycles, still, that doesn't mean it can't be slowed somewhat compared to Oblivion, it just means it can't be TOO slow.

If the movement speed in the game was scaled in the same way as the world is, you'd probably move like a snail, no thank you, I like being able to get to the building across the street in less than half an hour real time.
