Make the world more alive.

Post » Wed Nov 24, 2010 6:17 am

When I traveled Oblivion I felt the wilderness was kind of dead, as I ventured out all there would be would be some dear, a wolf or a bear and then every once in a while a mountin lion. The landscape would only have a few trolls around there would be some will-o-wsp around the swamps by Bravil. I would like Skyim to be teaming with wildlife and creatures I want the world to feel alive I want to explore and see things wondering the land, not just mainly stuck in front of caves and ruins and sparsely out threw out the land. Bring Skyrim to life! Please... :foodndrink:

There are lots of little details that can enhance the environment and provide a more immersive experience like animals attacking in groups, perhaps some of them might try to protect their cubs, flocks of birds flying around etc...
I agree with you

I AGREE.

DON'T FORGET THE CITIES!!!

The cities in Oblivion (and Morrowind too) were [censored] DEAD.
MOAR PEOPLEZ!!!

The Radiant Story system seems to randomize NPCs to, filling the cities with a lot of NPCs. But that's an assumption based on what I read, nothing confirmed.

What worries me about randomization is that we will see less unique NPCs and more bland ones.

I wont forget the cities I want living breathing cities in my game world too that is a part of the world, also the people that live in the cities should also be unique and have their own patterns and so forth that would be awesome. Thses two things was a major complaint with Oblivion.Bring us more life in the "entire" game world I want to feel as if I am there I want to feel the emtion of the people and see the nature of the wilderness dont just paint a pretty picture for us to travel.

yes indeed, more life, packs and herds of animals. It would also be cool to see animals reacting to their surroundings. One thing I did like about Oblivion was seeing the ocassional deer darting past and then a few seconds later seeing an NPC hunter chasing after it. What about animals running past you ahead of a storm, or being chased by a pack of wolves, or things like sheep being herded around by a shepard ? What about getting scared as you approach a patch of bushes by some birds suddenly taking flight. Hearing bards and music coming from a tavern as you walk past it and surely they could throw in some jesters or stand up comedians sometimes telling jokes or stories either in a tavern or on a street corner.

I agree, particularly with the cities. I mean I'm all for a more lively wilderness, but in all honesty when I walk through my woods they do seem kinda.... dead.

The cities, shops, castles, and taverns on the other hand were some of the weakest points Oblivion and the Fallout games had. It was a giant leap to give the NPCs schedules so that they are not simply locked in place... but it was jokingly bad to walk into a crowded tavern that was as lively as a tomb. The cities in Oblivion still had an eerie feel to them due to lack of ambient sounds and activity. The NPCs walked around like zombies, giving the world life... but very very very bland life. More NPCs performing more activities, and better ambient noises would help the cities and especially the taverns greatly. If I walk into a tavern filled with people I want them to be having a great time, and making a lot of noise. It should feel like the tavern is alive. When I walk into a town full of people I want to feel like I am in a busy town.... not a town full of zombies.

"Teeming with wildlife" is only OK if most of that wildlife doesn't attack you on sight, otherwise it gets old real fast.

Frequency of aggressive animal encounters actually felt about right in Oblivion, but I agree that it would be great to see more ambient wildlife such as birds in trees, etc. I'm glad to see that wolves actually hunt in packs now. It was always a little underwhelming seeing a single wolf run at you...

Let us hope an equal degree efficiency accompanies the new AI's improved power.

The Radiant Story system seems to randomize NPCs to,

Let us also hope they took advantage of the opportunity this new mechanic produces to have a dynamic economy.

What about birds? Just to see some fly away toward the horizon would make the world feel more alive.

Even sounds of birds would help. I believe audio plays a huge part in environmental immersion.

Ambience is one of the things I am talking about too, and no not every creature should attack but there should be some attacks. It would be great to the world respond to you: the humters was good but that should be more fleshed out with different happings in the wold you should see alchemist collecting plants, travling merchants. You should see factions moving around the world training apprentices and the like and not every enemy and or creature should be at its highest level and there should always not be the hightest level creatures around.

Reeeeeeeally hope this isn't true...I want every NPC to have a schedule, to maybe have a family, to be unique. Its so much cooler and way more immersive.

looking at GI mag looks like some creatures attack in groups now (wolves, ice wraiths etc.) so that'll be cool.

I agree I would hate to see faceless people repeating the same thing everytime I talk to them. They did this with Fallout NV but Obsidion made that not Bethesda lets just hope gamesas does not take a page from their book...

Obsidian added ravens on random places in new vegas, only that little touch made the world a little more alive. Bethesda should add ravens inn skyrim, ravens has deep meanings in norse mythology :)
other thing would be wolfpack's that actually hunts deer and other creatures, so the player can stumble upon a surprise of angry wolves protecting their prey.

That's a fact.

-> background music, walking around... tralalalala, I'm in a swamp, Ohh there's a dead body over there.

or

-> background music, walking around... suddenly the music stops, I'm in a swamp, I only hear toads moaning, the wind is rustling through the leafs and a vague buzzing sound in the distance... as a proceed the buzzing sound becomes stronger... it's swarm of flies and OH MY GOD THERE'S A DEAD BODY OVER THERE!

Agreed not everything should want you dead like in the real world. I just want a living breathing world, one where the weather changes with a great sense of noise and life things happening and changing for a sense of newness in the game. Like let it snow in an area we come back later and the area is muddy from the melted snow things such as this.

@god-of-madness
i agree bears, wolves etc should only attack when you get too close to them, or if they're starving.

Yeah like real animals that would be great. There should be more water life too plants in the waters and more water creatures living in there some hostile others not. Another thing that would be great see the animals fight eachother not all team up on you, have certain species fight eachother havee the hunters eat their pray and have the plant eaters flee or leave the body of their kill untouched, this would be a small but great touch. Have bandits fight Maraders also over gold gear or thelike also...

i think bethesda could learn a thing or two from 'red dead redemption'
like with the mountain lion stalking a group of deers
or some random guy running for his life because hes being chased by a bear or pack of wolves.
that kind of stuff was really fun to see.

Great example, I agree a hundred and ten percent. Certain random events would make the world a whole lot more entertaing, I imagine for us all.
