Make Wood Elves more serious

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 2:31 am

I dont think thats a bosmer as thats too tall.

Unless they've done what I hope they've done, and that's make the male Bosmer the same height as the females.

well now ur jus talkin about morrowind graphics... and im pretty sure we can all say morrowind is a pretty ugly game by todays standards. ofcourse oblivions wood elfs looked 'better' and thats simply cause of the engine/character designs. and i wasnt talkin about them being abominations, i was sayin they need to look a bit more dirtier since accordin to the lore they are suppose to be more uncivilized.

While certaintly, it can't be denied that Morrowind's Bosmer would look better in higher quality graphics, that's obvious, and it's not really what I meant. Even compared to the other races in he game, I found them pretty ugly, and not the good kind of ugly like orcs are supposed to be. More the "What's wrong with your FACE?" kind of ugly. Things like the goofy beard on one of the faces, or the already mentioned soulless black eyes, or the forehead bumps on another one of the faces, these are design decisions rather than the results of low graphics quality. And maybe some players thought those things made them more original, but myself, I didn't like them. As much as I want originality, that is not the way to do it.

Are you guys specifically talking about the males? The female Bosmers were always more serious than there male counterparts, especially in Oblivion with characters like Umbra and Methredhel. In fact, an NPC in Oblivion makes a joke about the female bosmer being 'ok' compared to the males.

The thread doesn't specifically mention only males, but I think that the general tendency to not be taken seriously is definitely more of a problem with males than females. All the Bosmer I can think of that fans like to make fun of are males, with females generally getting more roles that are taken seriously. Maybe it's the height. There seems to be something about short characters that lends them to comic relief roles, at least, a lot of writers seem to think so.

Simple thing really. They could be more "uncivilized" and viscous than the nords with their connection to nature, but Bethesda always seem to either make they ugly looking, annnoying or just there for the comedy factor.Infact,I wouldn't have noticed them in Oblivion if not for the Annoying Fan and Glarthir.I would love for them to play a bigger role in Skyrim.Maybe there could be a group of them in Skyrim who cause trouble for hunters, and command the mammoths?Or,just something that is similar to the Skaal tribe in Bloodmoon without being nords.Anything really.Just use them more and don't make them seem so annoying/comedic Bethesda please.

Perhaps, "more serious", could be said as Pranksters. Quite often in lore elves such as the Bosmer (like brownies, etc) pulled wicked lil pranks on passersby, friends and enemies! I think it would be hilarious if they could actually have a skill for crafting pranks on NPCs. Pie in the sky stuff, but fun to think about!

They don't even need to go as far as the long haired lithe pretty folk elf look. Just do a dignified version like the ones they have on the concept art http://elderscrolls.neoseeker.com/w/i/elderscrolls/8/87/Bosmer_official.jpg instead of the mincing weirdo race.

I was disappointed to see Bosmer used for comic relief. I'd like to see them be stealthy, mystical folk.

.....maybe somewhat like the Wood Elves of Lothlorien.

So, here's a look at the wood elves of the past couple games. Their change from Morrowind to Oblivion was generally an improvement.

Like it or not Wood Elves Will always be the laughing stock of Tamriel.
They should be more like the wood elves in LotR movies IMO
Wasn't The guy who spoke gobbledygook in Crucible a Wood Elf

People, we have 4th era here. Fourth Era for Gods' sake! Is it to much to ask for some racial equality in our enlighten times? Come on.

Graphically yes, but otherwise really? I think most bosmers from Oblivion look like funny little humans with pointy ears,
it dosen't really help them when it comes to seriousness.
Now a lot of them did that in morrowind too but I personally think the ones with black eyes look ok. Change the eyes black, give them a better voice and don't make every pathetic character in the game a bosmer.
That would do a lot in my opinion

Nah. I would rather see them as these affable lot whose mannerisms are naturally peppy and unnerving at once. With a knack for a cannibalism.

I prefer woodelves be rather small realy. Its quite nice being able to fit where the taller folk cant and its very interesting to see the world from that perspective.

As for seriousness.. id say there should be both types serious bosmer and light hearted ones...

Lore wise they're pretty badass really. Barbaric and cannibalistic elves that resent formality and just want to be...
This is something that bothers me with bethesda, sometimes they seem to have a hard time living up to the lore in their games.

I'd lean more toward looking human with pointy ears than a manga cartoon. Generally. I'd definitely slim them up so there's less http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:MW-npc-Celegorn.jpgabout them, trim back that muffin top. The eyebrows in the middle of the foreheads is a bit weird too.

Well, for me personally in the case of the Bosmer, the line between those two modes should be blurred somewhat... I really don't want them to be restricted to the stock comic relief archetypes all the times too, but I think the general overarching nature/mood of the people of this race ought to be somewhat ambiguous, as in you cannot really tell whether this random spiked-club wielding Bosmer just greeted you "Good day!" because he really was being friendly or he was actually being snide and wanted to rob you.

edit: On physical appearance, I think that generally they should be almost/around the same height as the female ones; sometimes even much taller, but mostly it's the short and stocky few who are extremely popular with the Bosmer girls :hubbahubba:

I don't see the manga resemblence at all,
anyway I think they should have a less humane look that resembles their barbaric and animalistic nature. In my opinion the black eyes helps that.

I generally don't think they should be as well spoken and social as a lot of the other races either

As said before, the lore shows them as almost barbaric creatures - this would be something awesome to implement into the land of the already barbaric nords. You may not take a 4ft tall human seriously, but would you take a 4ft tall cannibal who can command mammoths seriously? Also,I prefer the Morrowind wood elf models - if that model was put into a better graphical game (like skyrim) they probaly wouldn't look so strange.

i would imagine them to be tall, slender/strong, and agile, as the savage hunters they play as.
i always play as a wood elf, because i like elves, but high elves are too magical for my taste and their yellow skin disturbs me.
it would be cool to see them to be like na'vi, but more human sized. or generally just switch up their anatomy to give more differences than just ears and eyes.
im sure they wont look stupid in skyrim, seeing how detailed and more realistic faces look in some of the screenshots, its just they could at least be abit more vaired and different than the average humanoid species and definately have some more of their culture and lifestyle. than a typical npc life in the game.

they were made into joke characters, the men, the women not so much. You think people would want them as mercenaries, they are the best assassins and bowmen in all of tamreil

Also they did look pudgy in mw and ob. Making them more agile looking would do much to help them.
