Making another character

Post » Thu Oct 22, 2009 4:02 pm

Okay well I'm making a new character (as the title states) but well I haven't played through the game legit yet, in other words I haven't played through the games where I do not duplicate items and even then I've only played through the game 2 other time before. So what U want to do is play through the game where I gain money the way it was intended (whether that is stealing, murdering, questing, or raiding, or a combination of all.)

Now from what I've said it probably seems pretty simple and you might be thinking/saying "Then just go play it like that why bother posting this?" well I'm posting this because I want some good ideas for what to do once I finish the tutorial, should I go across the river to the ruins and kill the people there and raid them for the "goodies" inside? Or should I immediately go out and start stealing things from the innocent? Now of course those aren't the only options I mean I'm basically asking, what do you do and what do you think I should do?

Now while you are hopefully thinking about that how about you also help me with a character? Okay well, I usually make a wood elf with general thief stuff, acrobatics, athletics, sneak, marksman, light armor, security (things like that I'm not listing what I have always put just what I normally put, just because I only played THROUGH the game twice doesn't mean I haven't made many characters.) so I generally go out and get a good bow a few scrolls and a good arrow and start duplicating that arrow so I can quickly go do some questing usually in thieves and dark brother hood. This time I want a change of pace but i don't know what to do, if I should try and be noble and have morales and not steal anything, or be awfully evil and kill every one I find alone in a dark alley way, or just in-between doing as I please. But most importantly to me as of now, whether I should be a mage warrior or a marksman like I'm used to. I want to know what you usually do and then maybe combine some of them and make a character from that.

In the end, it's up to you. I've made all kinds of characters, all of them being hybrid. I pick the majors I plan to use and move on.
Almost all my characters end up being in the Mages' Guild. Just so I can have access to the spellmaking and enchanting altars. I usually don't advance the quest line too much further, I like my buddies in Bruma too much.
After that, I do what feels right to the character. I don't join every guild and faction. Almost all my characters have Marksman as a major.
I guess we need to hear more thoughts of what you like in your gameplay, some of your ideas, before we can help you figure out a good character.
My characters generally speaking go on alchemy ingredient expeditions, it is during these explorations that I find more cool caves, stories, quests. I need to see what's on the other side of that hill....

You might find this http://www.linklost.com/occ/ useful, for creating your character.
The Oblivion Character Database is also a great archive to peruse different characters. You might find one in there to flesh out on your own. (I cannot find the link atm, but if you look through the different forums here for Oblivion, it's there.)

If it's money you want fast, I usually start with a few rounds in the arena.

One good way to make a break from the way you've played before would be to make a completely different kind of character.

I just played through the Main Quest with a Nord Barbarian, who joined only the Fighters Guild and the Blades. This was a "good" character -- no stealing or assaults on innocents. Very little sneaking; a Nord in light armor with a Claymore can basically bash their way through most situations. You just need to carry lots of healing potions and repair hammers, and keep upgrading armor and weapons as better stuff becomes available.

This character was strong enough to pick up and use the enchanted daedric maces and swords in Oblivion, and simply discard them when they ran out of charge.

It's a whole different way of playing... I usually gravitate towards either mages or the sneaky archer types, and it was great fun to play this wild sword-swinging barbarian who just ran headlong into combat with no concern for how many opponents there were. Survived all the way through the MQ, too. :)

Thanks I'll check it out and I might just have to make an alchemy character because I have never gone off searching for ingredients before and from what I've seen alchemy can be a decent way to make money as well as fun.

I do know about the arena but I was more looking for a good way for money over a long period of time I mean sure I can go back once a week and I think i still get payed from that? But you still helped I had forgotten about the arena so thanks.

That seems something kind of interesting I might make a warrior type eventually but I think I'm going to me a combo of marksman and mage just fo a bit of a difference and so I can get used to not duplicating items.

I've had your problem as well, until I thought for a moment.

In my 5+ years of playing MMO's, what was my favorite type of class?
HEALER!

So then I set out to play a character that is solely a healer -> Alteration, Mysticism, Restoration, Hand-to-Hand, Light Armor, Mercantile, and Armorer. Breton, INT+WIS, Mage birthsign.

It started out interesting- rocky at best. It was a grueling challenge UNTIL -> Enter the followers! I gathered a follower from the Fighter's Hall DLC (forget the name) and went to accomplish all of the Knight of the Nine quests. Lots of healing boosts there, then I got more followers. Now, I have the difficulty cranked up to make me feel more like a healer and less like a fighter. Keep the followers alive = keep me alive.

Totally different playstyle, but I'm loving it :D
