Making DOSBox easier to use

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:53 am

In case anyone is interested I've put together a collection of scripts and software which makes playing Elder Scrolls games in DOSBox as painless as possible. It's perfect for those daunted by DOSBox, but also handy for anyone who just wants to play without having to bother about configuring everything to work right.

I've http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General%3a%44OSBox_helper and made it available there for anyone interested.

Comments, suggestions and bug reports are very, very welcome.

Great tool.

If I should ever feel like playing Arena or Daggerfall on my Windows XP PC, I might look into it (the last time I tried to run it under Windows Vista was disastrous, as the original game files wouldn't work so that I had to download a already patched and Windows ready made version, which then occasionally corrupted my save-games) .

Right now, I'm using Boxer (version 0.86 beta, don't try 0.85, it won't work with Daggerfall !) on my little 13,4" Macbook. Everything works flawless so far. No glitches except for some in-game ones.

FYI I use Windows Vista, so it should work just fine for you on that system if you wish to try it in the future. Indeed, I had to jump through hoops to deal with three features of Windows scripting not available in various versions of WinXP; Vista was much more friendly for me.

Humorguy, have you even looked at or tried JKing's app? It actually works better and is more comprehensive and easier to use than a front-end; it does everything for you. I've seen JKing trying to help a lot of people with the older TES games and DOSbox over at UESP, and as I understand it, the reason he wrote that app, was to be a once-off helper to all those people seeking help with getting the older TES games to run.

You seem to be greatly in support of using a front-end, and that is fine, but you don't have to be insulting towards other people simply trying to be helpful, in the process.

Hmm. Everyone else seems to like it but me, so maybe I'll give it another shot. I grew up with DOS and actually like using it, so this usually negates any purpose for me to use a frontend, but it would be nice for older games that are still picky about CPU cycles.

How about people use what they want to use and not make a big deal out of it? Sounds good to me :)

If you want to discuss the scripts to make the older TES games easier to run by JKing, then do so here in this thread. If you want to bicker about DOSBox frontends, do so elsewhere instead of ruining this thread, like making a tutorial thread on how to use frontends to run the older TES games.

While my deleted post did briefly discuss front ends, it's primary purpose was to say "thank you" to JKing.

So again, thanks for making this JKing. I was able to get Arena running, something I thought I'd never manage.
