Making Fallout Fresh

Post » Sat Oct 23, 2010 12:51 pm

I have a level 30 completely complete character and want to make another account, however, there's nothing to motivate me to do it, it just gets boring...
Give me some ideas to make Fallout truly fresh again. Keep in mind this is on console, not PC because my PC version does not currently work.

Roleplay! Pretend that you have family outside of the vault. Maybe Casdin is your uncle from California? Pretend like you have friends.

I've definitely done this a few times. Actually just made a new one a few days ago. Here are some ideas of what to change up:

Take a different karma route
Focus on different Skills
Become the ultimate unarmed fighter (Deathclaw Gauntlet is helpful)
Blow up Megaton/Don't blow up Megaton
Pick Perks you wouldn't normally
Try to complete the main quest as quickly as possible

Uuuurrrrrm. How about you make it your aim to kill every NPC in the game. :D That could take up some serious time.

Or a slight twist to this:
Play the game with only a lead pipe or baseball bat and wearing only your Vault 101 jumpsuit, and avoid confrontations as much as possible.
Try to finish the MQ at level 2 or 3.

Pretty much impossible, I know, but it might be fun to try.

I liked that roleplay idea, but killing everyone, is not my style.

Take a different karma route-Done all of em' except I can't be evil... I made an account which I beat the game with once, He was evil, but his dad gave him the "be a better person" speech and it made me feel bad...he turned good after dad died.

Focus on different Skills- meh..

Become the ultimate unarmed fighter (Deathclaw Gauntlet is helpful): I think that unarmed is useless.

Blow up Megaton/Don't blow up Megaton: tried both, the megaton explosion is nice to watch, especially at night.

Pick Perks you wouldn't normally: meh..

Try to complete the main quest as quickly as possible: I always do this.

Is that maybz why you're bored? Dude, STOP COMPLAINING XDD If you wanna take a break, do it, play something else until your enthusiasm comes back. It doesn't sound like we have the answer.

Then you are missing about 90% of the game.

There is so much story and hidden easter eggs scattered around the map that sometimes I hit level 30 before I even
Spoiler
rescue Dad from Vault 112.

Even after about 15-20 playthroughs, I still happen to stumble over a location or hidden surprise I've never found before.
Example: Just yesterday, I discovered for the first time the door to Alexandria Arms hotel.

Here's my idea:

I'm currently playing with certain restrictions. (Note, this is about my tenth character.) 10 Stims. Ammo has weight. One Big gun, one mid-range gun, one handgun and my spiked knuckles. I'm a slaver.
I am not going to get all bobbleheads. Selling most of the skillbooks. No Comprehension, no educated. My SPECIAL is nothing special. If I'm crippled, I have to walk my crippled ass back home.
Barter is what it was when I left the vault, 14.
Most importantly: All transactions must equal zero. This means that you trade crap for different crap. If it's not zero, you walk away. I can only make money collecting for Sierra, slaving and helping out Murphy. I'm level 21 at the moment, I only have 248 caps. It's quite fun, and quite difficult. I don't repair unless I am safe, and standing in front of a workbench.

Being all powerful is quite fun, don't get me wrong. But it gets boring. So I create play restrictions to make the game more challenging. Don't do all the quests. Roleplay. Only do things that are true to your character. Just some thoughts.

Go to some place like Megaton and be the town serial killer without alerting any other NPC's. Collect their heads and stack them up, I know its sick but slashing off everyone in Megatons head with a sword and then stacking their heads in a pile never gets old. (I'm not this sick in real life)

Or try and kill nobody in the game except the ones you have too.

That's funny, it's exactly the other way around with me, i just can't play the good guy. I hate to be doing all those good responsible things. Fallout 3 is an RPG and especially centered around freedom, which i tend to exploit to the limit. I have never made a good character, the first one was slightly less evill than the later characters, which are simply downright psychopaths. I don't know, being evil is just .... more fun. Why do you think actors always prefer the roles of bad guys above the good noble cop? Precisely for that reason.

Megaton is where your mother lives so you don't go sleep at home too often.
You keep supplies at Nuka Cola machines in strategic spots all over the map.
That way you travel light. A little ammo, food, meds, spare parts are kept in Nuka machines only
If you're in trouble you better make it to a stash soon, no fast travel.

Play without using fast-travel or VATS, soon spices things up. :tops:

Also you could shake-up which skills you train. If you are anything like me then you will get really maticulous about which skills and perks you choose to boost so you get the best outcome. However I find when I put so much thought into these choices any other choice later for other characters seems silly because I can't reason myself out of that previous choice. I find eliminating logic from the process makes things much more fun. Say, pick four skills at random, close your eyes and choose or whatever, and only train those skills after leaving the vault. Once each one of those is maxed out, pick another at random. :twirl:

Whether you want to or not you have to play to whatever strengths your character has at the beginning, plus I find it does end up shaping how you play even after your skills level-off later on.

When I started looking for ways to make playing on the 360 more fun I did things like this:

RPing was very important for me. I always get very bored of a character that doesn't have a good story.

I ignored the MQ a lot. I still do. I would only go as far as getting the Enclave out and about so I could fight with them. I also avoid doing every DLC every time.

I stopped repairing my stuff to 100%. I stopped putting points into repair all the way up to 100 and used the traders more often and didn't invest in all of them and used Moira a lot more.

I have used EW and only used Laser Pistols, although I did use the uniques, and I didn't use VATS. I carried A3-21's PR for emergencies (when I might die) and then I used Unarmed for back up and would use it against Reavers (Unarmed is very much NOT useless).

I limited myself to a rifle, a pistol and a handful of grenades and, when I wasn't playing an Unarmed character I would limit stimpaks carried and also carried limited amounts of weight and items in general. I still only carry about 75 pounds around with me out of habit.

I played one character that used zero stimpaks. She was really fun and never touched the MQ at all, but did go out to PL.

That's all I can think of right now. I tried everything I could possibly think of to make the game more fun. I played it pretty much constantly for almost a year on the 360 before I moved to the PC.

Really what made the game more fun to play was just RP as most other users have said. Pretending to be a 2 rebel Bro's of steel with Charon is just... epic.
Also, you can play protect dogmeat. This game is most fun in dangerous situations where you have to kill anything attacking dog meat.

OR my favorite thing to do is exterminate towns without losing Karma. The barrel trick is insanely fun. I am not sure if any other user likes this or discovered it. It's when you find those random barrels around Megaton, pick them up with whatever button you use to pick items up with, and ram them into characters... I did it to Lucas Simms for his armor. And it is just time consuming. It's fun to stack all the piles of bodies up near the Atomic Bomb. You can be as insane with killing as you want without losing Karma.

Discover every bloody location on the map, and go in to every damn site there is and scourge it of its goodies? 8D

That's what I've been doing all along, and I find myself finding new things every place I go :/ (that, and the Fallout 3 wiki helps me with discovering unmarked quests :3 )

Otherwise, if nothing compels you to make another account, then just take a break! There's no harm in it :3 Shoot, I've done it XD And now I'm back on to it and stronger than before XD It's a game that can get boring, but can never get old. It just takes some time to get the inspiration to get back on to it :)

EDIT: Either that, or dress Charon up in ridiculous armors/head wear/face wear...That tends to pass the time at times XDD

Or yell at your followers for doing stupid schtuff :/

Hey EnclaveRulez,
Pretty much same as you right now. I dont havt the game installed right now after i took it off a few month back as i wasnt playing it anymore, but i really am considering installing again. There are still a few places i have to explore fully, but i just dont know what to do to make it interesting. Role playing is a cool idea. I used to like role play on Oblivion asa vampire and being able to only go out at night.

On my topic "Making Fallout 3 More Challenging" I made a list for myself to make it harder.

Go outside and do something productive? Surely that is a better use of your time then needlessly repeating a game beyond the point where it's fun?

Ive had the same problem so i created a list of restrictions to try and make it more fun here it is:

1. No Buying or Selling anything, You must only use what you can find

2. No perks to increase "Ammo" gain from boxes or AP+

3. Must be played on Very hard

4. Must maintain Neutral karma without using the Water man

5. You must only carry 5 weapons (1 Large gun, 2 Small and 1 Melee)

6. You can only be in possession of 2 Unique weapons at one time (even in storage, if you want another one you must sell the one you dont want anymore)

7. The Deathclaw cave must be cleared by Level 15 (Without Chinese stealth armour, all deathclaws must be killed)

8. All quests must be completed

9. Restriction on armour, No armour higher then Combat armour

10. No Companions

11. Optional: No Fast Travel

Anyone have any others challenges like this to add?
