Making money

Post » Sun Apr 18, 2010 10:11 pm

I'm new to oblivion and need a way to make quick money. I bought the game quite recently and it is the game of the year edition which I have been told has the infinite money making glitches patched. If anyone has any quick and honest ways of making money they would be greatly appreciated:)

I haven't played Oblivion in a long time, so I have forgotten a lot of the legitimate ways to make money.

However, I know that in the Imperial City Market District, there are a load of barrels by Red Diamond Jewellery with food like apples, corn, etc. They all have the property 'Restore Fatigue'. Go yo your alchemy equipment, and mix everything you have! Your Alchemy skill will improve and you'll make some honest gold, too.

Just go around the IC buying all the cheap (10 gold or less) alchemical items you can buy. Should get around 1000 gold or so the first day and get your alchemy skill up a ton. Thats with all the inns and the two alchemical shops.

Another option is to explore the IC sewers and all around the island, fighting everything you encounter and selling the spoils. Good way to work on skills.

I usually make money leveling up my character and killing some bandits. Thanks to the stupid auto-level of the enemies in Oblivion, they will appear with daedric armors and other übber items. Kill them, save one armor set or two and the sell the others. You will make A LOT of money quickly.

Head down to Leyawiin and hook up with Mazoga. Helping out that Orc will net you enough starting cash to get going.

Why go honest........

Just buy three of any magical scroll. The magic shop in IC is the best. Then go the scrolls and "equip them". Then go to an item and drop it..... the item should have been duplicated to the number of scrolls you have...

First-- kudos for wanting to do it honestly. I've never even understood the point of playing the game if you're just going to take advantage of glitches and cheats. For that, you might as well not even bother.

For money making suggestions: as noted, the best way to make money in the early game is through alchemy. Empty the barrels in front of Red Diamond Jewelry, then buy all the cheap ingredients you can get at the inns and the alchemy shops and make as many potions as possible. Sell them to someone with relatively low mercantile skill, so you can barter your way up to the best possible prices-- Ogier and Thoronir are both good ones in the Market District, although the guild alchemists are generally better and Sinderion in Skingrad is best of all. His disposition will almost always be maxed from the very beginning and he has horribly low mercantile skill. Note though that he also has very little money, so you can't sell him large quantities of things.

As you're traveling, raid every farm you come across and use all those ingredients for potions and sell them. Join the mages guild and take advantage of their free alchemy equipment (there's respawning equipment in the glass fronted cases) to make more powerful and thus more valuable potions (and, if you're comfortable with doing it, you can also sell them the alchemy equipment you just picked up).

When your fame reaches 5, you can hang around the Temple District for a while and a quest will present itself. Finish that one (there's a bit of a trick to it, but it should be pretty easy to figure out who's telling the truth and who's lying, and thus what you should do) and you'll find a very easy way to make quite a bit of money at any point for the rest of the game.

And other than that-- raid dungeons and sell the loot. The best return on investment is creature dungeons-- you'll get very little armor or weapons but quite a bit of enchanted jewelry, potions, scrolls and the like, which are actually, pound for pound, quite a bit more valuable. However, when you get to higher levels and very valuable armor and weapons start showing up, marauder and bandit dungeons start paying off better, though it can be a hassle transporting all of the loot to some place to sell it.

BUT! After doing all that alchemy, you should be able to brew up some really good Feather potions to help in hauling the loot back to town :D

you could just sell the poisoned apples you find in fort farragut they are worth about 300 a piece and the barrel respawns so you can make about 2000 gold every 3 ingame days.

(you dont have to be in the dark brotherhood to do this btw)

Rockmilk Cave, North of Leyawiin (westside of the water). Three levels with marauders and bandits. Various chests of loot.
Gets better around level 12, when they start wielding glass daggers, which will get you rich quick.

And obviously, good for practicing skills no matter what kind of character you are. Thieves level their sneaking and stabbing, warriors level their Armorer, armor, weapon choice, and others. Mages, well, you get the idea.

Just remember to wait 3 days after you sell stuff and Fast Travel back to the entrance.

I actively farm this place when I'm not roleplaying.
There's like, no downside to it. Unless you find this kind of thing boring.

to make money...naturally do the quests and such...but i found that do alchemy on a regular basis then selling the potions helps alot....if you have soul gems (and done a majority of the mage guild quests) use them to enchant cheap weapons like an iron longsword, that will raise its value considerably then sell it

If you're into cheating you can always use the gold cheat. Cheating is always an option!
