Making a Settlement in a Vault?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:13 pm

We can build ourselves a home or fortress in the upcoming Fallout game, but is anyone here hoping we can use vault 111 or some other local vaults and use it as a home? I mean think about it we can fix it up and invite people over to live there with the current vault dwellers(if alive) and we can have the option of being overseer or not in there. Personally I think it would be great idea to live in a vault that is not designed to kill to you or kick you out in the future. Just a nice vault that we can call home.

Ive got a feeling that Vault 111 will of had a catastrophic systems failure which is either way your are revived or it happens during your exit. It probably may not even be accessible after you leave.

Maybe, but given we can scavenge for parts, and possess the skill to build buildings and electrical grids, we might be able to restore a vault to a livable status. I wouldn't allow it to be a large settlement, but certainly it could be a very secure one.

Todd said before that there are "large open spaces to build on" which leads me to believe that we have pre-designated areas for settlement construction rather than "do whatever"

I think Vault 111 would be too big of a hassle considering its elevator entrance. Also, defensibly, that's one of the worst places to build a settlement. Your only way out is a giant killing floor for your enemies to rain down bullets on you.

I wonder if Sanctuary Hills or whatever it's called can be turned into a settlement. I think turning your old home into the heart of a new community would be a meaningful endeavor. A way to wipe the slate clean. Begin again.

Though, maybe it would be better for the PC to let go.

Well you could construct defenses on the outside, some walls, gates automated turrets. Even build a structure around the Vault door so they can't see the reinforcements coming up the lift. This would give you a tighter defense perimeter because all the living space in back in the vault.

The main stumbling block I think is Vault 111 was likely built for suspended animation so it'd lack all those nifty water purification and food production facilities a more traditional vault might have. So it wouldn't be of much value. However it is likely they're will be other vaults in the Boston area so even if they have the same door style a defense perimeter could be build around the entrance.

I don't think this settlement creating system is as free as people like to believe. I don't doubt the game will offer a variety of locations to build, but I think there will be limits. Creating a settlement in a vault, for example, I doubt we will be able to do that. But I could be wrong, and Bethesda could be setting out to really deliver with this new feature.

I think Todd Howard said something about pre-designed locations to build on rather than ''go where you want and start building''.

if u turn a vault into a setelment if imagen urd have to have a outer setelment to i mean if the water chip fails as is most likely u would need to have a out side to grow food and get water from leaving the vault as more of a storege dump and fallback locason kind of like vault city

Remember I made a home in the vampire cave outside of Skingrad in Oblivion, had movable furniture and it was no respawn in that cave after the vampires was killed.

----

Not sure exactly how the construction system will work, but it looks like it need an construction workbench for the area, so someone has to make an portable one.

Must also have an way to turn of respawns.

I'm sure mods will allow this, I know that's the first thing I'll do. I'll have a massive settlement just outside of the Vault, then others can live comfortably inside. And I'll carefully turn them all into my willing slaves.. Muhaahaha!!

Probably for the best since I would otherwise fill every inch of unoccupied space with my creations >.>

Also I think there would be issues with people building in an underground environment in terms of rendering. All built settlements will be above ground in the open in key locations that are probably indicated as you find them or people in game said 'That flat place near the basnballin field would be great place to live' . THey will likely be marked on your map. Im actually looking forward to walling up some places (if possible), get some neon going and some automated turret emplacements ... and a place to put some Brahim.

I also hope there is a option to take Codsworth with you. Wouldnt feel right leaving him to tend to the house/ruin like he has been.

We already know there will be pre-designated spots in the game for you to build, but the idea of Vault 111 being renovated is a good one and still possible. Fallout Shelter having been released is an example of getting everyone to get a taste of what it would be like. It may not happen, but it could. It would be simpler in terms of not being attacked, etc. but just have people lope around.

The settlement feature is great, I will make use of every spot in the game it is offered, but I can't help but feel the random encounters, etc don't matter much except for mixing up gameplay every now and again. Kill a few raiders, get their loot, repeat. Nothing bad or too extreme, but it reminds me so much of the radiant AI quests from Skyrim which were just a chore.

If you could, the good name for that place would be Vault City 2.0. :D

if I remember what Todd said at E3 correctly: the protagonist was the sole survivor of event or situation that went down in the vault. Whatever this was, it was definitely catastrophic because the protagonist's wife and son didn't survive. Same for all those vault dwellers we saw on the platform when the bomb exploded. I suspect those events must be associated with some sort of cryogenic suspension that preserved the protagonist for 200 yrs as confirmed by his former house robot.

Regardless of what happened in the vault, conditions seemed bad enough to prompt the protagonist to leave it in the first place. So it wouldn't make sense lore wise to try building a vault city like settlement around it. It also sounds like where we can build in the world is very restrictred

Eh, to me, building a settlement in a vault seems like the lazy way.

Because it's not really building, it's re-purposing. Vaults got all that stuff in them that can be kept going with a little elbow grease. Settlements top side require infrastructure and design. You lose that with a Vault.

Honestly, I'm hoping we can rip out some of the more pristine looking vault interior decor and build homes out of that. A nice gated community is just what Post-Apocalyptia needs.

Well, the demo looked made it look like you can build over current buildings, not only destroy them for new structures.

And the place looked like Sanctuary hills too.
