Re-making the old games

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:37 am

i had a great idea while i was sitting idly in school. what if Bethesda re-made elder scrolls 1&2 into oblivion or Skyrim graphics? i would really like to play those games but i cant get them to work on my computer. (please dont tell me how to make them work. i am trying to figure that out myself)

Forget graphics, just porting them so that you don't have to screw around with DOSbox would be nice... and allow controls to be remapped as well.

Someone is already working on that, for Daggerfall anyway (DaggerXL).

I agree, if they were to remake TES I - IV with Skyrim's graphics and engine, that would be so cool.

They lost the source code and core data for Daggerfall so even if they wanted to redo Daggerfall they'd have to start from the ground up.

Problem with re-making an old game is it is never going to get the reception it got first time around. In fact the people that loved it would demand that it stayed so true to the orginal that it would pointless. Now if they made a game set in Morrowind or in Cyridiil that was after the storyline of there respecive games and alowed us to explore the years after each then that would great. However there are a lot of unused areas/lore that I would like to see first.

You want a game with the size of Daggerfall, or with the amount of dialogue of Morrowind, but with Skyrim graphics and spoken dialogue? That's clearly not doable. There is always a trade between quality and quantity... if only for the amount of space the game takes on your hard drive.

How about we stop talking about remakes.

Enjoy the 5 games we have.

And look forward to NEW provinces...

This
I wouldn't be happy with MW if it cut the old armour, weapons, spells, creatures etc. Its not just a matter of recreating the story and quests, essential as they are
There would be almost as much graphics work needed as if making a whole new game and a considerable amount of reworking of Skyrim mechanics required
Even then a large proportion of the original fans wouldn't buy the new version and not all the new fans would be that interested in them either
Far less risky and more creative to make a new title. Its not like theres any shortage of provinces to set new games in and the political situation is quite fluid and interesting now

a full remake would be good, as long as they didnt cut out stuff people wanted and bring in crap people hated. i would pay for it thats for sure.
the problem with remakes though is they never stay true to the original, look at the recent halo anniversary, its halo reach on halo CE maps, and you dont even get all the maps -.- thats an automatic avoid. now if it was halo CE with better graphics? great, but they decided they wanted armor abilities, the new weapons from reach and other lame stuff.

Eh, why bother? The old games are there, leave them as is. I find Arena to be pretty close to unplayable - it definitely hasn't aged well, but why remake it when they can continue the story? If they were to do so, it would perhaps only really be interesting as a DLC/expansion pack of some sort, but that really wouldn't be practical.
