making weapons

so i've heard that you can "forge" your own weapons via blacksmithing... is this true? can you shape your weapons and make really unique swords? this would be a very awesome feature, as well as armor and have something recognizable for your character, something that people would recognize and attribute to you.

It'll work like in fallout. Gather items, craft, get item. No real customization involved.

Not much is known about smithing and forging. However we have information about the crafting system (Based on sketches in a video.), but it's uncertain whether or not smithing and forging will be part of this, if so, crafting isn't much complex. It involves finding a recipe, the items required for it, and craft it with a single press of a button.

Kinda like Fallout 3's crafting system, or FNV's.

I would like that, but I dont think it will happen. It'll probably be like making stuff in FONV, where you gather the stuff you need, go to a place to make it, and then you trade those items away and then get what you made in return.

But with the new engine, who knows?

if they make it more complex though, I doubt there's gonna be a "total customisation" option. instead we might get presets, or maybe separate preset parts that we can arrange together. well that's the way I see it anyways.
I mean, it wouldn't technically be possible for players to make their own weapons in-game without a few polygons showing, and that would RUIN the feel of the game

It could in a way be thought of as similar to alchemy: you go out and find the material for your weapon of choice then ala you have your new weapon. I love the whole idea of potion making now there is crafting, Skyrim is going to be amazing!

I doubt you actually shape your weapon. It'd be nice to be able to find designs for a unique sword that can only be obtained through forging it.

i bet all of the weapons will be ones you can find in the game anyway,

Doubtful they would got to the extent of having different finishing moves for every weapon then create a smithing system that doesn't allow the creation of uniques. My guess is that only uniques can be smithed.

I agree with you on that would not make any sense otherwise...why would they add it if you could just buy the weapon or take it from a fallen foe.

I would like to think there will be some sort of customization to weapons. Like you can make a certain type of sword such as a short sword, but use different types of materials like wood, iron, or gold which would give it different stats (and a different look and durability). Given that we can also mine, I think that type of customization is possible... but I wouldn't expect a whole lot more then that.

can you shape your weapons and make really unique swords?

If you mean will you be able to design what your actual sword model looks like.... then absolutely not.

I doubt it, first of all, you didn't even forge a weapon, you just gave a guy materials and money and he had the weapon already in his inventory.
Second of all, in the mag, it says you forge your own weapon, chop your own wood, etc. your not gonna get someone to chop your wood too are you?

well that depends on the way they make it. I mean, the way I read it was that the finishing moves were different with all weapon types (longsword, dagger, axe), not every single weapon in the game. still, that would be really awesome if it did it that way.
it would also give a reason to keep some of the weakest weapons in the game, if their finishers look cool

I really hope this is better than NV and Fable, I mean in thus sense. If it were somehow combined it might be better.
