Mammoths Giants and Dragons! Oh My!

Post » Thu Apr 22, 2010 7:00 am

I don't think there has been a thread like this but I feel like i'm the only one thinking about how insanely awesome and fulfilling shooting arrows at a mammoth and watching the giant skid against the snow or tumbling over shaking the earth as it hits the ground. The same goes with giants and dragons. The rag doll i'm sure will be one of the best, seeing as they created a new engine. haha i know this isn't really good for discussion but have you guys thought of this too? haha

You can't underestimate the value of physical size in this kind of game. I remember Gothic 3, the game was a little below awesome, but killing the gigantic trolls in that game was an awesome feeling.

Dragging a mammoth at all is epic all by itself.

... *LIGHTBULB*! does anyone else think that it'd be a great quest line where you join a group of hunters to hunt mammoths as a group? Maybe helping a village get enough food for winter or drive them away from a village? That could be epic in nature

Yes, I'm really looking forward to seeing what other animals are confirmed, aside from the usual bears, wolves, etc. I want to know if there are other ice age themed creatures and how many different types of wild life there is in total. We'll probably never know the exact number though I suppose. I'm definitely wondering what else will be confirmed. I also recently found out that ancient dragon myths were most likely derived from dinosaur fossils that were found, although possibly somewhat obvious when one considers the similarities they share with dinosaurs, but cool none the less, especially considering the theme of Skyrim's setting (however also bearing in mind of course that most/all large dinosaurs had gone extinct before the ice age).

I am so damn excited for mammoths. God, I can't wait to see a herd of sixteen foot hairy behemoths thundering across the tundra. And then kill them with fireballs!

If I was able to drag a Mammoth, I would drag it into the nearest village and be all "Who's hungry?!"

Exactly! It's amazing to me that they are even putting them in the game!

If I did that I would wait 3 days.

A few times in Oblivion, I actually killed an animal when they charged at me, I dodged, and they went off a cliff and died suffering fall damage. I'm wondering if this will happen more with a rigid terrain. I would love to see a mammoth charge off of a mountain- funny AND epic! :D

While I really like the idea of large creatures...I don't think I'd described shooting arrows at a mammoth as "fulfilling." Either they are going to die too easily and it will be disappointing, or they will be too hard to kill and it will be frustrating.

The only way to kill a mammoth is with a spear, preferably thrown from a distance. I just have this imagine of ridiculously hacking at their legs with a sword, and either (I hope) getting trampled/thrown 20 feet in the air, or being ignored until they unclimactically run out of hitpoints and die.

Yeah i'm hoping that convinces them to put some sort of javelin or throwing spear in. Maybe not though

I'm hoping that there's random, ever-re-creating hunting side-quests

Yeah they need something like that to keep the game going longer. oblivion had things like being the listener for the Dark Brotherhood but that got boring. They need real missions that continuously and randomly come up

it would be awesome if there were a few groups of dragon hunters who go hunting at certain times in the month. obviously if you don't help them these may slowly die by the end of the game...or maybe they are infinite. that would make more sense
