It's Man's World

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:50 am

I tried playing as a woman in at least 1 game but it just didn't feel right to me. Not saying that women can't be kickass superheroes who save the world, but it didn't feel right for a man to be playing a woman in a video game unless I was forced to. I did greatly enjoy Mirror's Edge, but in that game I'm not customizing my character's clothing and trying to develop a back story.

I can't really vote on this poll because I will only play 1 playthrough. No game has made me want to reload and start over. Once I conquer something, I move on. I may continue a video game if it allows, but never start over:

Man as Man

Reasons:

1. I don't have six identity problems.
2. I don't need to see a female on a pixilated screen. I can see the real thing in RL.
3. I embrace my masculinity.
4. I can't RP other people, just not that good. My reactions/emotions in game will be my own as I would react. I cant keep track of a split personality. ( Probably why I didn't get into acting)
5. I have questions why men try to be feminine. I can't quite understand it..

In the first question, there are 30 women. In the second question, there are 25 women, and in the third question, there are 26 women.

ArcherOfTheWest added the second and third questions later.

Man playing a man always. I play for immersion, and having people refer to me as the wrong six, and being the wrong six, are two things I don't find very immersive...

I'm surprise nobody has flamed you about that statement. That sentence about woman has all the bells and whistles of a chauvinistic statement.

:shakehead:

Because of the thumb svcking society we live in today, it is no surprise someone would interpret that to such a dramatic and description. "chauvinistic".

I am no sixist. it was a joke. There has been much worse. Do not take that comment serious. I will edit and remove the comment to appease the overly sensitive individuals on the forums such as yourself and the others.

Most men who like to play cross-gender don't have six-identity issues either. I always play male characters myself, but I've met many normal, well-adjusted men who enjoy playing female characters. It seems to be almost exclusively a straight guy thing too.

Just to randomly reply... :)

1. Nor do I. See #4 and 5

4. I don't really "RP" my characters. To me, they're just action figures or playing pieces that I'm moving around on the game board. Sure, I designed the face and picked skills, but once I'm done with that, it's no different (for me) than running a pre-made character (like Lara Croft, or Kratos, or Ratchet, or Bayonetta) around in a game.

5. As mentioned in #4, I'm not "trying to be feminine". I'm just playing a game with a female main character.

Something I've noticed (and mentioned) in previous threads on this topic..... people who see the character as an avatar or representation of themselves (or some form of "if only I were that macho/musclebound/etc" wish fulfilment) think it's odd to play the opposite six. People who don't see the character as being representing theirself, don't have any issues with it.

Me? I've pretty much never played any game (either with a pre-made character, or a custom one) where I thought "I wish I was like that". Nor had that thought about movie actors, TV characters, sports heroes.......

also, re: "pixelated women on the screen"

For thousands of years, people have appreciated beauty, aesthetics, and the physical form, whether it was in person, sculpted in marble, sketched with charcoal or colored pencils, painted on a canvas with oils or acrylics, photographed and printed (in, hey, lots of tiny little dots of ink) on paper, broadcast on a TV or movie screen, etc.

Not sure how "pixels on a screen" 1) is any different than any of those earlier media; and 2) makes any difference.

very true.
and it is not about playing yourself.
It is role playing a character concept, which takes gender into account.

and I agree with Kiralyn2000s point #4.

In your response to 5. I am not inferring these reasons as singularities, or all or nothing for others. These reasons are a combination of why I don't RP females. They shouldn't be indicative of everyone. Its just me.

As far as your notice on other threads: there may be some truth to that. I am comfortable in my own skin and don't feel the inclination for drastic wish fullfillment. (discounting the fantasy, suspension of disbelief setting)

As far as the physical form. Some truth to this also, I don't know of a male who can walk by a Maxim magazine without taking a second look at the cover. I think I was more refering to the juvenile perversion of the 'animated' female form. Modded or unmodded.

And they would play whatever gender they identify as, and thus don't need any special poll options.

I generally play female characters (I'm female) because it's easier for me to relate to another woman as a character, but occasionally I'll play as a male character once I cook up some character concepts for one.

I'm a man playing a male character every time. I just think it's creepy to play as a female if you are not one.
