You wonder where the Dwemer have gone? Perhaps better to wonder why one remains. Even gods dislike the absolute, for it stinks of something larger than themselves.
It is nearly 2013, and our minds have, for some time, been turned to the year 4E201 (or thereabouts). But a shadow of the past has been spreading throughout my mind like a bacteria as of late, and I've come to share it so that you all can be plagued just the same.
WARNING: The following chain of questions leans heavily on background information obtained from an Obscure Text (cursed be their many heresies). If the square peg of "canon" is something you hold dear, I recommend swift flight.
In 1E700, the Dwemer disappeared. This is not any re-examination of the Dwemer's disappearance, no. The worms in that can have been dead a long time. The purpose of this thread is to examine http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lte0osPp9T1qkf4s8o1_500.jpg Yagrum Bagarn: the Last Living Dwarf. As posed by Seht himself in the quote above, isn't it almost more curious that one single dwemer remained? Piles of ash found in dwemer beds tell us that regardless of where they were, every dwemer went poof on that day. Whether they were absorbed into the skin of Numidium, nabbed by Azura, or wholly unmade, at least it happened to all of them.
Except one.
Here's what he had to say on the matter:
Hmm.... I cannot say what happened. I was not there to observe. I was in an Outer Realm at the time, and when I came back, my people were gone. I left Red Mountain, wandering Tamriel for years, searching our deserted colonies, looking for a survivor or an explanation. Then, a long, long time ago, I returned to Red Mountain, still looking for answers. Instead, I found corprus disease, and I have been here ever since. I have theories, if you are interested.
He was exploring an outer realm. While the fate of his people hung in the balance in the dark heart of that Mountain, Yagrum Bagarn was off gallivanting in a bubble somewhere outside Mundus. It's easy to say that Yagrum was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, but he tells us himself that he was a "Master Crafter in the service of Lord Kagrenac."It's not like he was simply a dwemer adventurer exploring the strange places of the Aurbis, this was an employee of the man himself! Kagrenac, the most brilliant enchanter in Tamriel's history, bound the souls of his entire race to this giant stompy robot. Even the exiled Rourken of Hammerfell were enveloped by its golden skin. The two facts at hand--Yagrum being a servant of Kagrenac and Kagrenac being a damn good enchanter--don't quite allow for the excuse of "he was exploring," when the most cathartic battle of the Era was occurring. There must be something else here.
Yagrum, on the other hand, seems to have regained much in the past. He still shows signs of corprus, but his memory seems to slowly be coming back from time to time. He spends quite a bit of time on his own now and wishes to remain alone. I am sure that glimpses of his past, coming freshly back to him, give him much to ponder over. I feel for my old friend. I only wish there was more I could do. A temper seems to rattle him every now and then and I have instructed my sister-wives to leave him be. In time, he will come to and understand what fate holds for him.
And interesting thing.... Yagrum confronted me after my arrival from the council, and wished to know if I still had the Tools in my possession. Upon hearing that the Hortator had taken leave and carried the items off with him, Yagrum seemed quite upset. What is going in that mind of my old friend's. I shall keep a close eye on him, for I worry about his well being
Here we depart from the beaten path and wander into speculation. It is clear from this letter written by Lord Fyr that the Last Living Dwarf had been slowly regaining his old memories, some of which evoke strong emotion. Moreover, he expresses a keen desire to see the Tools. What have Bagarn's memories revealed to him, and why do they require he hold the Tools again? Is it possible he remembered the purpose of his sacrifice? Is it possible Kagrenac sent him to that outer realm? If so, why? Why should one remain?
Commence hypothesis.
