Considering Vegas wouldn't have been that big of a target, nothing too important there, there's a lot of Vaults in the area extremely close to Vegas, why would they build so many Vaults so close together in an area that's extremely unlikely to get hit?

Also on an unrelated note, Vault 21 I think it was, Mr. House filled it with concrete, anyone know the reason behind that?

I liked it back when V13 and V15 was days apart from each other...
But since they had to do it in a cramped game area they also seemingly had to (for some reason) have a lot of vaults...

Like most giant corporations in a capitalist economy, Vault-Tec was all about selling a product regardless of whether people really needed it. (EDIT to add: And don't forget that plenty of companies have tried to sell fallout shelter supplies and such in the real world, where we have not actually had a nuclear holocaust.)

First of all, Vegas was EXTREMELY likely to be hit, and in fact was, it only survived because of House's cunning. It's a major population center, the bastion of capitalism (perfect target for Communist China), and conveniently located near Nellis, one of the most important bases in the country. Plus it has a major airport, in all-out nuclear war any airport will be a target to eliminate the enemy's capacity to have an air force.

Living near Nellis and Area 51, even though they were both a distance off, probably made people paranoid, so Vault-Tec saw the chance to get rich and vaulted-up the place. Plus an open desert is the perfect place to prove how awesome the G.E.C.K is, too bad Vault City is the only vault that ever survived to use it.

I think House filling up Vault 21 had to do with him wanting them to come to the outside and be the first residents of his Strip.

The reason is, Vault 21 runs very close to lucky 38 and he was using V21's systems.
If you want proof look an one of V21's computer it says something about the Lucky 38.(but it could be cut content)

It doesnt really matter where the vaults are as long as their there. Also vault 21 was going to be completly filled with concrete so the machines couldn't be messed with but the person who runs it convinced mr house to leave some because she lived there and wanted to turn it into a hotel.

Because the Vaults weren't intended to save anyone, just test humans through various means to see if space colonization was feasible. Even if the Vaults had been designed to work as advertised, the only person that knew Vegas wouldn't get directly hit by bombs was House.

Public. Vegas has people too and not building any vaults there would have royally pissed off the locals. And Vegas was targeted.

The Vaults in the game represent the Vaults that would be in Southern Nevada but all cramped together because eveything else is. Still there are to many to make sense. That area of the united states had such a low population and the vaults had to look like they were being built to protect people. Areas with larger populations would wonder why they have little to no vaults when Nevada has six. There are only so many to go around 122.

Another thing why does Nevada have Vault 3 and Vault 34? IMO I always thought that the vaults started in low number in the West and went higher in number as you go East. New Vegas changes all that.

Also, they should try to leave as many Vaults as they can make room for fans (I'm actually planning to use 4 Vaults for a FO2 mod I'm thinking about making, one of them will be a random encounter I'm thinking. Of course the FO2 Mapper is a cranky thing.).

This is the correct answer. "They" didn't build lots of vaults, as in the government or local authorities in Vegas. You convince people there's something to fear and that your product will protect them and they buy it up faster than you can make it. Sound familiar?

Actually Vegas was a target in the war. If you go to the H&H tool company and read through the terminals it tells how Mr. house defense system kept Vegas from being hit.

Who are "They"? The federal government had the vaults built all 122 of them and at a great cost at a time when America could not really efford it. USA fighting a large war against China, occupying a large part of china all while having its boarders closed to the rest of the world. No resources coming in and none going out. Oil long gone.
