Map Boundaries

Skyrim will be surrounded by a fog that gets thicker as you walk into it and eventually all you can see is fog.

Like in Ravenloft? Sweet.

a bit off topic lol but the first time i played oblivion ( was very young and foolish) i thought the game was morrowind, and tamirel the entire continent playable, that'd be cool a tes rpg if it was entire tamriel but one can dream :P

on topic: i don't really mind what they do as long as it doesnt ruin anything for me as oblivions didnt.

If you go back an play Arena (The Elder Scrolls I) you are able to visit all of the provinces in Tamriel. I think in Daggerfall ( TES II) you can visit most of them....

They could even make a joke about the bureaucracy in Skyrim and send you in circles to no avail trying to get your documents to leave the province. (Think the beginning of Ikiru)

this would be impossible if we want them to reimplement levitation and jump, though :(

I don't really mind invisible walls. It's more realistic to just say to the player "this is where the edge of the map is, so stop trying" as opposed to "You can't climb this mountain, it's impossible to climb, yet somehow people have made it through before lots of times". What's much worse is in New Vegas, when it's basically like "You can't jump over this car, or even climb on top of it... even though it's like half your character's height." Honestly I think the only better solution is an island, but that obviously doesn't work in Skyrim's case.

Actually in Daggerfall you could only visit Hammerfell and High Rock. Though the map itself was larger than Arena's.

Daggerfall takes place in High Rock and Hammerfell... or more exactly in some parts of them.

On-topic: Invisible walls are less ridiculous then all the stuff people here have come up with.

In far cry 2, the sun would make you black out, and you would wake up near the edge.

They could have a snow storm that gets more intense as you go out of the intended area, until you collapse.

Preferably only on the northern side though.

That's actually an awesome idea.

Perhaps they'll extend into Morrowind a bit and have water on two sides.

Would be cool if you could go a bit into morrowind and see the disaster of Vvardenfell, from a distance ofc.

I can deal with invisible walls at the tops of mountains, or along the top of a fortification wall, amid dense clumps of trees and underbrush, etc. When it's in the middle of an open field, and the NPCs are gleefully shooting you from the other end, yet you're not allowed to go there, that's a problem.

Maybe when you get to the border have a swarm of cliff racers come and knock you off. It'd sure stop me from going up there... damn cliff racers...

Jiub (Or is it Juib?) did drive the Cliff Racers from Morrowind and it's possible they just went to the borders of Skyrim...

I would say throw fog for about half a minute worth of walking, then the game automatically turns you 180 degrees, causing you to unknowingly wander back into the very spot you started.

It would be amazing if we could get a (very distant) view of a part of Vvardenfell in Skyrim, even if we can't go there.

RETURN TO THE BATTLEFIELD!

6...5...4...(screen turns red)

3...2...1...

(PC explodes)

I wouldn't mind if impassible mountains surrounded Skyrim on all sides except for the north, where it could be endless sea. Perhaps in some areas there could be roads with gates, and if you walked near the gate, a guard would say something like "Sorry, the road's blocked" or something like that.

Also, I think it would fit if there was a large fortress wall separating Skyrim from High Rock/Hammerfell, since the nations have had wars in the past...

I like this idea, it gets rid of the need for invisible walls, and because there is nothing to see but fog, the player would turn back on their own, toward areas with content / detail.

They should put mountains or something in the way. At least make it slightly more immersive. Maybe theres only one route thought some mountains into skyrim and its being guarded by some soldiers in a gatehouse or something and theres no way in.

I'd like if it was done by natural boundaries, but then again, Oblivion's system wasn't too bad because I only went to the edge of the map a few times.

I would like it to be possible to go exploring north of Skyrim...take a boat from Skyrim and then land near the pack ice to the north...and then go exploring on the ice...ala North Pole region of Earth. This could just mainly be for hunting animals for furs.

How about this:
To the North: Endless Ocean (via Vvaardenfell)

To the East: Unpassable mountain ranges. The water north of the mountains that you could swim around past the border to Blacklight, Morrowind will give you a message "the horizon seems to go on forever. Perhaps I should turn back." and if you don't heed that warning, you wake up on the frozen shore of Skyrim, with no fatigue, past out.

To the South: Massive Mountains makes a natural border to prevent further venturing into the Jerall mountains.

To the West: Mountains all around the West border of High Rock. And of the water above it, look up at the description I gave for the East border.

All subdirections should be blocked with vast oceans or mountains.
