Map Boundaries

Post » Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:17 pm

I agree with the idea that the PC should pass out whenever they get too close to the edge of the map. I have an idea not too dissimilar, only more 'hardcoe'; you slowly freeze to death if you leave the border. I mean, swimming in a freezing ocean should be obvious, and the higher you go, the colder it gets, as well as less air to breathe. So yeah, those tall border-mountains can be scaled, but you're not going to live long enough to make it across them. And arctic waters would sap your energy and turn you into a popsicle within minutes.

How about this:
To the North: Endless Ocean (via Vvaardenfell)

To the East: Unpassable mountain ranges. The water north of the mountains that you could swim around past the border to Blacklight, Morrowind will give you a message "the horizon seems to go on forever. Perhaps I should turn back." and if you don't heed that warning, you wake up on the frozen shore of Skyrim, with no fatigue, past out.

To the South: Massive Mountains makes a natural border to prevent further venturing into the Jerall mountains.

To the West: Mountains all around the West border of High Rock. And of the water above it, look up at the description I gave for the East border.

All subdirections should be blocked with vast oceans or mountains.

Hmm... I kind of like it. Maybe for the mountains that are obliviously passable instead of making a wall they could make it so it gets colder and you get a frost effect until you eventually die or pass out.

It going to have invisible walls plus a sign flashing red and yellow that takes up 40% of the screen saying
"TURN AROUND, WRONG WAY!" while an alarm goes off thats louder then anything else in the game like TV commercials

Mabye a gate of some kind which you cannot get past and has a large dispell effect around it?

RP reasons could go like this:

"You will need a permit to get past here.move along."

when asking about the dispell they will say

"in order to stop people levitating, teleporting and enhancing their jumping through magic to get by,we needed to make a field of dispell."

of course, that would harm mages i guess...

I think there should be open water for a ways, just north of Skyrim. Then Pack Ice for a ways north of that...till the end of the map, where there is just a permanent unremovable stop. But you can still see just endless snow and ice...sort of like at the north pole on Earth.

Well I do not care much ... There will be mods in no time , which remove those invisible walls (you can also do it yourself) and people will start making mods wich add some parts of Morrowind,Cyrodiil,Hammerfell and High Rock =)

I might be in the minority, but I would go for the invisible walls, cause that way we can always turn them off later. And for console players there is nothing out there anyway so why not just have high mountains with nothing on them to deter you away, but if you go far enough then you hit the wall. Anything besides this might be hard to mod off for the inevitable expansion mods. Plus we don't know anything about the game yet, so we don't know if it will be all (Oblivion style) or part (Morrowind style), or even parts of two or more provinces (Daggerfell style).

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but I actually like this idea.

I was kinda joking but like the foggy mist idea now. Or they could just have Todd Howard come out of the forest and throw you back across the border. :D

Thats the best one.

The one about the fog turning you around is pretty rad as well, I'd go for that.

I really can't see them doing it any other way than invisible walls. Oblivion had invisible walls even on its ocean.

 kind of like mortal kombat. He can pop out from behind a tree and shout "toasty!" or hand you a fishy stick or something.

In Far Cry 2 your character had malaria, and if you went out of the boundaries you would get gradually sicker and then pass out. And then you would wake up back in the boundary. It was a nice touch.

I was just gonna mention that, cheers.

Anyways, I actually think they should do something in the lines of Far Cry 2 only with the cold, its Skyrim after all...

If you're reading this, Bethesda, please consider my suggestion to have a red velvet rope around the entire perimeter of Skyrim with periodic signage stating "Please do not step past this line." It's the only way to please everyone.

When I used to work at the International Spy Museum, I was king of stanchion (velvet rope) configurations, so I can fully endorse this idea. :tops:

Considering the natural geography of Skyrim, I'd imagine their only natural barriers available are mountains and bodies of water. Oblivion attempted to use as much of these as possible, but it was still necessary to add the "invisible wall."

Honestly? I don't have a problem with the invisible wall. In Morrowind, there was no "boundary" necessarily, but that was because of the island's convenience; further, to avoid the necessary boundary, they simply had the game spawn generic water cells for every new cell you swam into, so it wasn't so wild new adventure of exploration. In the end, whatever is necessary is fine by me.

consider whose fault it could be...

now turn back to the map and continue the story"

I liked the water thing in Morrowind.

However, all of that open water was just screaming for a pirate island. =D

Yeah, it'll be invisible walls most likely. That's why I'm now hoping that TESVI will be in Summerset Isle because it's all surrounded by water. Now that's a province I cannot wait to experience. I probably sound like a turd in the punch bowl talking about Summerset in the Skyrim forum. But oh well.

As long as the game game is exceedingly epic then I couldn't care. Just include a different message than basically saying "Plss off, we haven't made that province yet. :brokencomputer:

Dragons dropped boulders into the only mountain passes and destroyed all the bigger sailing ships; effectively cutting Skyrim off from the rest of Tamriel. So no invisible walls, just mountains and destroyed harbors :D
