Map Boundaries

Post » Mon Oct 19, 2009 2:28 pm

How do you think they are going to do the map boundaries in Skyrim? I really liked in Morrowind how it was just an island and you could swim out as far as you want without having to worry about invisible walls. In Oblivion, I hated how you could be walking towards a really nice looking area and all of a sudden you were stopped by some invisible boundary telling you to turn back. That hurt the exploration aspect for me. How do you think they will do it in Skyrim?

Probably just invisible walls again :(

It svcks, but I can't really think of any other way unless, the dragons magically break Skyrim off of the mainland and it becomes an island

I'm guessing invisible walls. I don't know what other way they could do it.

I imagine it will be exactly like Oblivion.

Morrowind probably would have been the same way if it had utilized the entire province of Morrowind.

To the north there is a sheet of ice or just water. In the ice you will be killed by vampires instantly, in the water you will be eaten by a whale.

To the east i am not sure.

To the south there are mountains.

To the west there is nothing?

I was just thinking that maybe they could just make some huge a$$ mountains around the map boundaries that are impossible to climb. I would like that better than invisible walls.

Endless ocean isn't much better but I hate the invisible wall rule.. Maybe they'll get a random generation script for the areas beyond what's programmed.

If you look at the maps, it would appear that some of the boundaries are blocked off by natural walls, such as mountain ranges to the east and possibly southeast, and the ocean to the north. I'm guessing the other boundaries will be invisible walls, which is unfortunate but in this case unavoidable.

Perhaps they'll extend into Morrowind a bit and have water on two sides.

Skyrim will be surrounded by a fog that gets thicker as you walk into it and eventually all you can see is fog.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but I actually like this idea.

what they could do is make it so more enemies spawn the closer you get to the border, and it gets so difficult that your pretty much skewed by the time you reach where the border should be

I'd love for mist to roll in - you pass out - wake up back within the map boundaries.

But this would work best if there was a plot-related reason for the mist...

Actually just reading this idea.. Something like badlands in certain directions could make for a lot of competitive fun at high lvls, certain distances and such you could reach where ridiculous enemies spawn

I'm thinking it will just be unscalable Mountains. And by the way, mountain climbing is going to have to get improved from Oblivion. Adventuring near Bruma got really annoying. Spamming the jump button doesn't cut it.

Maybe one side can have an Imperial check point that wont let you pass, kinda like Mojave Outpost.

The other sides no clue, mountains I guess.

Or, they could do what Far Cry 2 did, where if you go too far out of the map, you pass out and go back to the edge.

It'll start flashing read and a guy on the radio will say YOU'RE LEAVING THE MISSION AREA, GET BACK IN THE FIGHT SOLDIER - and then the snipers will take you down.

I like the mist idea, and the idea of endless randomly generated land. I also like the idea of extending the playable map into western Morrowind so that more of the map can be bordered by ocean. I think adding more monsters as you venture further from the core of the map is a bad idea because it would actually encourage many players to go out there looking for some combat (challenge/experience/loot). I don't like invisible walls though I realize it's hard to come up with much else.

I also wouldn't mind if they had physical walls with checkpoints on paths, but when you try to go through a checkpoint, it's boarded up due to renovations or for political reasons or something...

Go old school. You hear a weird sound and a screen black out for a moment, then you are on the total opposite side of the map....

I like the idea of extending into Morrowind but I would be disappointed if we were able to get that close to Vvardenfell but not actually go there.

Actually, the Morrowind idea isn't to bad, after the events of the Infernal City, its likely the Nords may have of taken some of Western Morrowind.
