Map Maker?

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:30 pm

Hey, I was wondering if there would be a map creater. If there isn't would you like one and ideas of what it would be like?
It's most likely a really dumb question, but i figured i'd ask. I used the search bar and it showed no results on the topic. So im apologize if its a previously asked question

No word on an SDK kit as of yet, so probably not at Brink's release, if at all.

No SDK/Map Editor has been announced for release. In fact, no modding tools at all.

However both people from Splash Damage and Bethesda have remarked that each company is well known for their community support. :whistling:

But then again , making maps for Brink and all of its functionality would take more time and thinking than the usual CODradiant and others....

yea it would be harder i think because i would think they have to tell the maps where the smart system can work and what not so i doubt it will happen

With the SMART system I don't think this game will be very custom map friendly

With custom maps you could end up with cracks between buildings that might wedge a small guy between them forcing him to sit in a crack and hope an ememy runs by to kill him so he can respawn.

If the command console is still active for this game, you can just type kill in command console to suicide and respawn. I honestly do think after some time after release of the game, a SDK will pop up unless SD have changed their ideology on the modding community.

Unless it's an outright map editor that uses a wide collection of set tile pieces that only fit certain ways and are already accepting of SMART (think old Tony Hawk games, Timesplitters, etc.) and not an actual map maker.

A mapping community could add interesting directions to how the game evolves since that would possibly allow for the smaller scale TDM type games (just for those maps) that some want, but also for some really long and indepth objective oriented set ups.

On the other hand maybe they can create some sort of tool that "calculates" where smart can be used on the custom made map ? (I'm not and IT-er so just guessing :P )

I'd be more surprised if Splash Damage didn't include SDK at some point. It's not going to be out with the release but I'd expect it down the road.

SMART doesn't require special mapping techniques, the game figures it out realtime, and any map editor would look alot like GTKRadiant, have a look, it's a fun program

Well i know for sure http://brinkthegame.com/community/blogs/detail/?id=4 that system calculates what u see in front of u.There are no pre-made ledges and staff,i mean :

Our clever coders realized that doing raw environment "traces" to establish whether a SMART move was possible would be too costly for 16 players at once,
but all the information we needed to find ledges and low areas was already contained in the Bot Navigation Mesh.
Our level designers don't set up specific spots for players to use mantles, vaults and slides – the system simply pre-calculates where they're possible.

So this "Our level designers don't set up specific spots for players to use mantles, vaults and slides – the system simply pre-calculates where they're possible" means that everything is possible/doable.

An SDK is a good possibility though no plans for it and i doubt there announce something in next 2 months.

I doubt they'll have a map creator, but they'll probably have plenty of post release support, at least they will if they're smart. It worked for B:BC2, so hopefully Splash Damage/Bethesda will take the cue.

Question
BG: Looking at the demo running it would be a nightmare to have to flag each surface as mountable or not. How would you flag each area? Does SMART help you out?

Neil A: We don’t do it. Well it wouldn’t work to have to flag each of those areas as we’d be making mistakes. This is how traditionally all other games I’ve worked on have been that way as well. To have anything like that you have to pull up a little editor next to a box and say that means you can go into cover there and hop over it. We don’t have to do any of that as basically [SMART] does a compile and puts all the collisions in and calculates it all automatically.

Basically No, SMART systems handles that aspect..

Good idea, but I don't think that they are adding it, at least at the release.
