Map Scale

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:43 pm

Since Morrowind the game worlds have been getting bigger so I expect the trend to continue.

Funny, Funny stuff. Since Morrowind, the game world (no s) has not been to scale. Oblivion's version of Cyrrodil was slightly larger than Vvardenvel, which is supposed to be MUCH smaller than Cyrrodil. http://www.tamriel.fr/images/oblivion/cartes/cartes_tamriel.jpg

And before Morrowind, the maps were WAY larger. I.E. Daggerfall, given that it was mostly randomly generated terrain. Point is, unless their engine is made of magic crystals, it won't be that much larger.

In one of the older threads about this I calculated the map size to be about the same as LotR Online.

I doubt those calculations are accurate, but just the simple fact it's possible to make that comparison should confirm a significantly larger game world than Oblivion.

I hope the game is at least 90% hard-crafted! :D

A little bigger than OB maybe, but nothing like Just Cause 2... I mean imagine if cities were that freakin huge, imagine the amount of npc's they'd have to make, imagine the distance you'd have torun to get to a certain npc... I'm all for larger worlds and specially larger cities, but not THAT big ^^

Fast Travel

We're not (hopefully) going to be fasttraveling from house to house in a city.

Edit: besides, doesn't fix the fact that they'd have to ten double the amount of npc's

The average height of a step is 7 inches. With 7000 steps, that would make the Throat of the World higher than 4000 feet. That's actually pretty short for a mountain.

And it wasn't even an entire province. A true to scale game-world the size of Skyrim would be insane. I'd be happy with a Far Cry 2 size world.

1200 m, that is sorta small, then again, that's assuming that it's a big stair and not seperated by rock/dirty some places. Also assuming the steps begin at water level ^^

Wouldn't it also depend on the incline? They could be really steep steps. :P

Remember also that you can't go into every building in Just Cause 2 and pick up the cutlery and rob the place blind. Hell you can't even talk to most people. Not fair to compare the games really. Just Cause 2 has a massive world for the type of game it is but to expect something similar for Skyrim is just unrealistic.

According to who? It was just really big, not necessarily to scale.

It's pretty close though. If you take Daggerfall's measurements and put Tamriel on Earth. Tamriel is about the same size at Australia.

Why are you hitting yourself? Tamriel shouldn't be small enough to fit nicely within the Atlantic.

The stairway will certainly not start at sea level... You could say that the Throat of the World will be 4000 feet higher than the surrounding terrain; which itself could easily be 4000 feet above sea level.

The presence of large creatures such as dragons suggests a certain scale. They need space to roam and fly around without it feeling cramped. They may even breed, and the only thing bigger than a dragon, is more dragons.

I would be happy to find that TES V uses a larger meter stick than TES IV.

Um if tes v used a larger meter stick wouldn't that mean that it would be smaller in scale?? Think about if the meter stick was smaller it could be say .... 40,000 m wide but If the meter stick was larger it would be like 10,000 meters wide.

Sorry for all the fuss anyway I would like for it to be around the same size if not a bit bigger because oblivion was big Enough I think They need to focus a bit more on unique and more detailed landscapes, as the increased the size from morrowind to oblivion and that only laid to less detail.

wow.............lord of the rings online is HUGE compared to WoW. it also looks like the only used one map from far cry2 it had a second map that was roughly the same size.

They realy [censored] up their measurement, trust me, I have played the game, and its about 2x the size of WOW, that just makes it tedious to travel though.
The reason Just Cause 2 had such a large map was because you could travel across it fast. I could fly from one corner to the other in 5 mins with the right plane.

I wouldent say Just Cause 2 looks bad. In fact its a beautiful game thats multiplatform and has a game world that is absolutly huge. Here look at this pic it has Oblivion on it as well.
http://i.imgur.com/uBWCz.jpg

that compares some of the biggest worlds in gaming Just Cause 2 is big enough for me. Its 400 square miles after all lol.

Yea but Test Drive is a racing game and Just cause is action adventure Farcy 2 Shooter...

None of them have the depths of Oblivion in terms of interactivity with the world/NPCs/Quest ect.

WoW is a PC exclusive and its an MMO, the graphics are not even close to the level skyrims will be.

Its one thing to make a HUGE playspace but its another thing to make an in depth one

EDIT: also the map doesn't include the HUNDREDS of dungeons and other play spaces to explore within that map.

You forgot Fallout 3 which is also made by Bethesda.

Todd said it himself in 2008, Oblivion got so much criticism for being vast and empty so they made F3 small(er) and dense. And since then not many ganers have complained about F3 being small, most gamers say F3 has perfect size and density (sadly, because I was disappointed by F3 being so small) so expect Skyrim to follow the Fallout 3 formula.

I don't think they made FO3 smaller, its roughly the same size as Oblivion, just more dense.
