Map Scale

I wouldent say Just Cause 2 looks bad. In fact its a beautiful game thats multiplatform and has a game world that is absolutly huge. Here look at this pic it has Oblivion on it as well.

that compares some of the biggest worlds in gaming Just Cause 2 is big enough for me. Its 400 square miles after all lol.

Just Cause 2 is great, but its map is waay too large for Skyrim. You don't have airplanes and helicopters in fantasy RPG. Try playing JC2 by not using air vehicles and it becomes unplayable.
For me, size of Far Cry 2 map would be perfect. Detailed and large enough.

I don't think they made FO3 smaller, its roughly the same size as Oblivion, just more dense.

It technically is smaller than Oblivion. One thing to keep in mind is that the provinces that BGS builds in game are not to scale as they would be on a map of Tamriel. Skyrim will probably be roughly the same size of Cyrodill, if not bigger. Considering BGS has added 30 new employees, hopefully that means there will just be more in Skyrim overall.

Since Morrowind the game worlds have been getting bigger so I expect the trend to continue.

Well, that's not really a trend. I mean, Daggerfall was 63 thousand square miles while Morrowind after it was 10 square miles and Oblivion was 16 square miles. It's most likely that Skyrim will be bigger than Oblivion but until that happens, it really can't be a trend with only one game after Morrowind.

Anything larger than WoW is overkill. I'd be happy with a Far Cry 2 size world, maybe slightly bigger.

Arma 2 has a 125 square mile map with better graphics than Crysis.*

Anything is possible nowadays. It's just a question of what is a practical priority for gameplay.

*in terms of realistic natural terrain and quality of models and textures. Crysis looks better once you drench it in visual effects.

Yeah, like I said, the mountain terrain will make it almost unavoidable to have a map larger than Cyrodill, especially with High Hrothgar.

Whoever 'they' are, they're wrong. I've seen maps with scale her before, and it wasn't that far. However, there is a bridge from the mainland of Cyrodiil into the imperial city that is about 50 miles across.

It would be very helpful if someone posted an official source saying that Daggerfall is realistically scaled.

Anyways, hopefully it is bigger than Oblivions. I actually thought Oblivion's world was too dense, it was ridiculous to run across three forts, five caves, a couple of farms, etc, within five minutes. We need an environment that actually looks like an imprisonment, not one that is littered with random buildings all over the place.

Yes, Arma 2 has a massive game world. I just started playing that game and my jaw dropped because it doesn't have NO LOADING screens when you traverse the landscape. Pure streaming technology. The AI is one of the best I've ever seen in my life. For example, I got in a car and commanded a friendly AI to drive me from point A to point B. While I was in the passenger seat enjoying the beautiful countryside, this AI traverse about 200km through highways, towns, winding roads and bike trails avoiding all kinds of objects along the way. The travel took about an hour. The drive wasn't robotic or artificial. In other words, the AI was speeding, slowing down, stopping if there was an obstacle nearby and sometimes going off the beaten path to find a more convenient road. Nothing is scripted. When you kill an npc he will never respawn; he's body along with the blood decal will still be there all the time. The war is in real -time, in other words, while you are in a mission in one area your friendly troops are fighting 225km away at the same time. You can radio them to do duties for you in real-time. If you died, the war continues on without you. Indeed, this game is not player-centric. You probably saying what this has to do with the topic? Well, very much. It's easy to create a massive world such as Just Cause 2 but to have a level of advanced AI, not to mention the game calculating through out the map all ballistics being fired (bullet drop, wind deflection, damage to objects, calibre used) will bring Just Cause 2 fps to its knees. Arma 2 is a simulator so graphics, though surprisingly good and at times Crysis quality, is not its priority. People unfamiliar with Arma 2 want flashy Crysis-CoD style graphics but it's impossible for such a real-time open ended game world with such advanced mechanics and no loading screens to cater both things acceptably. There has to be a compromise somewhere.

The average height of a step is 7 inches. With 7000 steps, that would make the Throat of the World higher than 4000 feet. That's actually pretty short for a mountain.

Perhaps the steps don't begin until you are 2,000 feet up the mountain.
