Map size in future elder scrolls games

Post » Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:08 pm

Believe me I mean this with all honest respect but,

All you adhd attention deficit newbs who think the elder scrolls skyrim has huge map because your brain capacity is such that you can only maintain a small portion of area in your head at a time can svck IT. Skyrim is TINY. Great game. But TINY. I can walk across the map in 15 minutes sprinting. It should take 4 hours to get all the way across in a game as venerable as the almighty elder scrolls no joke. I do harken back to daggerfall, the game map was nearly the size of the entire U.K.! Pretty much what you have in skyrim is a cobblestone pathway, 30 feet of trees, then you run into a rock wall. Where are all the dense unfathomably ever spanning deep forest areas? Ripe with bears, bandit encampments and eerily hermitic primitive BlairWitch forest cults and daedra worshippers who will kidnap you and your friends and sever your organs in the most barbaric and godless of rituals!

And to all nay sayers, who say it's not possible, it's not feasable, no game company has the resources to produce a game on such an absurd scale in current gen, you are but an obtuse troll etc, I do open the scope of your minds that have never left the allegorical cave of your ignorance, I have seen the possibilities outside of this dark and ephemeral prison! Future Elder scrolls games should be 30x the size of Skyrim!

Here is the proof it can be done supporting my bovine claims and treasonous of demands!:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clakekAHQx0

The volkswagsters over at unreal engine made a promotional demo showcasing their engine's capabilities. This wasn't a game produced for any expected profit, they made this freely with no expected income in return, yet the jolly good fellows managed to build a highly detailed immense next gen world 10X the size of SKyrim! For no profit! With complex ai and behavior in their world's wildlife rivaling Red Dead Redemptions!

So! I say! Future elder scrolls games should be 30x the size of Skyrim! Give us a world impossible to fully explore! Let us so daringly get lost and panic in treacherously labyrinthine forests that block out the sky! Make us think twice before daring to brave uncharted territory all too perilous for the timid and fledgling adventure! KILL USSSSSS!!!!! TAKE AWAY OUR SOCIAL LIVES AND TRAP US IN PIXELATED HELL FOR ETERNITY!!!! TRAP US IN THE VIRTUAL SOUL CAIRN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elder scrolls need to be scary.

Even an encounter with a wolf should scare the [censored] out of you like you would if you were attacked in the mountains in real life, and fill you with a feeling of invincibility and awe at conquering your fears if you meet with the baptizing hand of triumph and success! More on how to achieve this through a tv screen later, I run out of time. These are the ingredients that create something truly epic by name and unforgettable! A title Skyrim already holds in our memories and hearts.

But you get the idea.

Skyrim is smaller than my school.

Farewell gents, elves, and hobbits.

We already brought this up elsewhere. Unreal's ability to shift the central marker to save processing power by keeping tracking centered over the PC allows for far larger landscapes without the need for much more processing power. The drawback is that this larger practically necessitates random generation, which comes with its own problems.

It's also just not doable without an engine hop, and UDK 4 is, frankly, not quite as user friendly as Gamebryo. I for one like it more, but it takes a lot longer to learn, and makes you jump through some pretty big hoops for some things...

I'm not sure if this was meant to be polarizing to evoke a response or is otherwise completely genuine. Huh.

I'm all for a bigger world space, though I think the number of actual locations as is, is dandy. Bigger cities too. But 30X the size of Skyrim is...well, hell. I don't even think the term pushing it is enough.

Awesome some one brought it up!

Honestly, if it looks as godd as unreals kite demo, I'm more than satisfied. EVen the areas that were less ornamented that didn't have as much attention as the parts they showed off were satisfactory in my eyes. I don't however expect the next elder scrolls to look as good graphically, the demo ran on titan x which is 3x the power of our new generation consoles.

Still, this is just something I hope for eagerly, I just want that huge imppsible open wolrd the blows your mind away and leaves you so inspired with you look like you just got [censored] by the video game genie.

That was just my wierd sense of humor. I'm quite the eccentric baskit case. Socially withdrawn, underachieved in life, you get the idea.

And how high end a computer is needed for that demo?

Bethesda Game Studios do try to ensure their worlds run on a wide range of set ups as well as the current breed of consoles. A TES game 30x the size of Skyrim would be well outside the hardware capabilities of all but a few people.

And that's before you even take into account NPCs, creatures, items, scripting all of which add to the hardware demands.

And as pointed out, Gamebryo is BGS engine of choice, attempting to shift to a new engine requires that they learn it (And likely throw out any work they've already done) and that can add years onto a development cycle.

Just ask the devs of Duke Nukem Forever about how smart it is changing engines because an other one can do 'this' or 'that'

Also, starting your thread with a barrage of insults is a good way of drawing mod attention.

Ah, so idk the word for it. I said future games. Didn't mean necessarily on this generation. Regarles of the tech bethesdas using you have to step up in an aggressive industry that waits for no one to catch up. js.

Indeed. Some of the basic mechanisms of Gamebryo, which Bethesda is unable to change, are falling behind the curve. Climbing is the most glaring, but tech demos for Nvidia also show new rendering process for fluids, solids and vapours that use adaptive collision to automatically prevent clipping, allow more natural fluid dynamics, and more realistic fire and smoke effects. It's tracking model for world spaces is getting up there, and isn't easily able to handle extremely large areas or anything that intersects the heightmap (requiring all caves to be seperste cells, for instance)

It's definately showing its age, and you can only tweak the system so much before it starts to run into some major issues.

I'd say they have one, maybe 2 games left in it... If they put them out sooner rather than later.

You think maybe they have a new engine they're working on for new gen? Forgive my ignorance, I don't look into this that far.

With their newest Gamebryo version, dubbed the Creation Engine, which they unveiled in late 2010/early 2011, they stated it would be used for at least 2 games. We know Skyrim is one, but I can't find any information on what engine Dishonored runs off... My gut says Unreal 3... If so, then we've got at least one game left.

Well I hope it can keep up with everyone else. It's looking like ubisoft and rockstar are going to be putting out some pretty crazy games. AC Unity's city with 25 percent of their architecture enterable buildings blew me away, something I thought I wouldnt see at l least for another five years for a virtual city that scale. I just have high hopes and expectations for bethesda and elder scrolls. For me it's the crown jewel of video games.

Ubisoft really paid for that though... Unity is more glitchy than Daggerfall, lags on consoles, and has a shorter lacklustre story compared to other titles. In fact, the glitches make many of the games core mechanics unreliable or frustersting... Even it's parkour system is the worst executed in the series.

Even without the glitches and lag issues, their efforts in making so many buildings enterable left a great big world with not much to do in it.

Oh ya I'm well aware, I think they're just at a rocky start with the new tech, Im'm sure they'll get it working more smoothly in the future, I mean they have to if they want to keep their rep.

I have to disagree on the parkour, their animations had a huge facelift in Unity. They have animations that allow for the character to slide and roll over very complex geometry like dismantled carriages, jagged debris, tables, chairs, posts, fences, and all almost flawlessly. I never once witnessed animation glitchiness covering these objects which I find remarkable to say the least.

I blame their lack of things to do/brief campaign on their dual development with ac rogue. I think this year's game should be a little more comprehensive. I have more faith than doubt in the future of the series. Unity looked amazing, with incredible fabric physics and animations, Amazing customization all imbued with physics, despite it's infamed glitches I found the material they produced, although flawed was quite impressive. I'm just hoping elder scrolls will beat it out. It'd be a shame for an ac game to be better than an tes game.

If we could have both a map 10x larger than skyrim and have the flexibility of gamebryo and its ability to render so many agents, that would be more than absolutely great. Though as it stands now, I'd be perfectly content with a game that is easily modable and dynamic than a game where the extra world space comes at the cost of all that. Perhaps in the future after the creation engine?
