Map size Speculation

Post » Sun Jul 11, 2010 7:43 am

Ok, from the place names listed in the various articles, videos and wiki entries I am speculating that the northern boundry will be just to the north of New Vegas (Old Mormon Fort) with the southern boundry slightly south of Nipton and Searchlight. The Eastern edge looks to be somewhere just east of the Colorado River, including part of the Black Mountains and to the west it will extend just beyond Goodsprings and Primm. Using my handy Hammond road atlas this measures out to a whopping 80 by 80 kilometers. I'm sure that Obsidion has compacted this somewhat, but this is still gonna be a Huge playing field.

J.E sawyer compared the transition from F3 to new Vegas as being similar to transition between GTA3 and vice city.
The thing that bummed people about vice city was that the map size wasnt as big as people thought. I hope this game has a decent map size.

Check out this http://bethblog.com/index.php/2010/10/05/fallout-new-vegas-official-strategy-guide-blog-mapping-the-mojave-stunning-vistas-and-slaughtered-settlers/.

It lists the game as having 200 Primary Locations plus the same amount that are not shown on your Pip-Boy. In my opinion thats why you need a guide for a games this size. Its going to be HUGE!

it will be at least as big as the Capital Wasteland, I've heard tell its even bigger. And map size isn't really important anyhow - Megaton, Rivet City were just dots on the map, but they are large places to explore. And inner DC was all squished on the pipboy, if they mapped it to real-scale it would have doubled the mapsize in FO3.

Also, Vegas isnt the northen end of the map, after hounding Ausir on the Wikia, he told me that New Vegas is roughly north of where Big Town on Fallout 3 is centered, so New Vegas is roughly the central point of the map. I don't know anything about Las Vegas and its surrounding areas, so I couldnt say if this Mormon Fort you mention is the border point, but if its just a slight point north, it might not be. But Im not sure about map points and the like.

While we're on the subject of Grand Theft Auto, GTA: San Andreas showed me that there is such a thing as too big. Anytime I had a mission or just some random mayhem I wanted to cause somewhere, the location was within a few comfortable minutes of (reckless) driving in GTA3, Vice City, and GTA4. In San Andreas, I often found myself spending boring amounts of time on the highways between each of the THREE cities. It was then I learned that I would've preferred just one densely-packed city full of stuff to do instead of three smaller cities spread out on a big map.

Likewise, I've heard that the New Vegas world map is going to be about as big as the FO3 Capitol Wasteland map was - and I'm okay with this. There are plenty more quests to do in New Vegas and that's all I really care about. Yes, there is such thing as "too small", but FO3 definately wasn't and nor will New Vegas be if it's "only" as big as FO3 was.

San andreas was an epic game considering the restrictions of the ps2.

Im just hoping for a lot of variety and a sizeable map.

Not once has Obsidian bragged about any improvements from Fallout 3. If it wasn't for Bethesda New Vegas wouldn't be here now. They've only been modest. Even If the map turns out to be bigger, I can understand why they never threw that in Bethesda's face.

What i meant is they'd brag about it for Marketing purposes . not to tease Bethesda studios .

I'm sure I've seen at least one of the devs say in a video interview that the map for New Vegas is of comparable size to the DC map, but has more places within it.

I wonder if the western part of the map could hit some of the eastern parts of the original Fallout map
