Hi there!
Since I have started modelling, I will surely need to texture. Can anyone explain to me What UV maps and Bump mapping does or point me to some tutorials? Any help qould be much appreciated! :)
Cheers! :foodndrink:

UV mapping is the coordinates for the textures you might say, without it you'll have a mesh without a texture. Bump mapping is a way to simulate bumps on textures. It requires the texture and a normal map of the texture, a normal map decides where the bumps are and how pronounced they should be. Normal maps can easily be created by programs such as CrazyBump. I use blender and i've learned most of it by watching tutorials on youtube, i just search for blender and whatever i want to learn, like blender uv mapping, blender bezier curves etc..

Thanks for the explanation, Vurt. :) Blender was too... difficult for me. I guess I will dig for some more tuts, just wanted to hear your personal look on these things, that is: how you explain it, most of the times, descriptions given by fellow people (modders this case) are much easier to understand.

And other thingie about bump/normal maping Morrowind dont support them (we would need per pixel lightning for that), we can only produce a fake one (bump map that is affecting the environment map, with controlling its intensivity in some places of the mesh via gloss mapping technique we can obtain some bump alike effect)

yes, i recently made a mod for Oblivion using bump maps, after that Morrowind's bump maps felt very weak :/

Some people like Blender, some like 3DSMax. It's like a musical instrument, you eventually find what fits you personally. I love working with shortcuts in Blender, it's so quick to work with, i hate getting lost in deep menus like in 3DS, but it's been 5-6 years since i last tested it, maybe its much better today.

Morrowind needs better normal maps. I'm suprised graphics hasn't been the focus of these engine re-writes, with new technology they could make Morrowind far more optimised and impressive.

Well yes, the shortcut system was what i liked most about blender.

Yep it realy depends on the person, for me blender was bit of a stubborn donkey when i switched to 3ds it was whole better for me, navigating the interface, really great and easy to tools (pelt mapping is godsent), more intuitive keyboard shortcuts etc, in week i learned more than month of blender, and actualy i started to make better models. TheDayWalker on the other side is walking example that you can make great stuff in blender too, but im still using blender because i can't find some blender scripts i use for max.
